Questions about Gym Equipment

Ok, so I just got a gym membership with my mom April79106. They have all kinds of fancy weight machines, adductor, abductor all kinds of leg things.
I have a question, how many reps or w/ever should I be doing? How do I start, I"M SO FONCUSED! I'm new to the gym nonsense. I tore up the treadmill though /shrug
Do I go everyday, is it ok if I go every day? I kinda want to go everyday, since it cost me 50 a semster (100 a year thereabouts or something like that)

  • Do they have any trainers or coaches who could give you a fitness orientation? I highly recommend that...so you can learn proper form and technique. Good job on your treadmill work out!! =)

    Most gyms have a trainer who can set up a routine for you when you first join. If your gym does not have a trainer try to do 3 days of cardio and 3 days of strength training. Typically 8 - 12 reps of 3 sets is good. Some prefer 5 sets of 5 reps though. Does the gym have free weights? Free weights are better because you have to stabilize the movement but it requires better form.

    Check with the staff to see if they offer an orientation session. Your workouts will reflect your individual goals and most gyms will take you through, show you how to use the equipment and make suggestions as to your initial program (some will offer one or two follow up sessions during the year but most will charge extra)

    It may be worthwhile booking a few sessions with a trainer to get you started on the right track.

    Yeah, I'd look at getting a few personal training sessions if possible.

    My second piece of advice would be to look at a program like the New Rules of Lifting for Women (it is a book).

    My third piece of advice would be to try to avoid machines at all costs but some people feel comfortable with them. Ideally, you'd use free weights unless there was a specific reason to use a machine.
