Calculating without HRM walking

So I have an app on my phone that tracks distance and average mph and even calories, but I don't have a HRM. I can't afford one (I'm broke) and the people with the money tell me to just check me heartbeat during an exercise ("Who needs a HRM?"). So I went on a spirit walk tonight for about 40 minutes (5 min shorter than last time (:) and really power walked and jogged every now and then. Problem is I have a really short stride. I can walk briskly to catch up with friends walking leisurely. So while I was sweating a lot and my calves were kind of complaining, my app said I was going 3.5 mph average (then it died on me so I had to calculate myself how much farther I walked and in how long) and those calculations said my average was 2.9mph!
But i don't like the way MFP sets up logging for walking, simply because I could be walking quite fast for me but not getting the distance and the time. NOW near the end I timed myself for 15 seconds and counted my heartbeat as 25, meaning 100 bpm. This seems really low? My app said I burned 149 calories. MFP says 168. Is there a more accurate way of determining my actual burn? According to my max heart rate, my fat burning zone is around 140bpm, but I was no where near that.

Well you are still working with an estimate for either source ( there are a bunch of different formulas and all of them are used by different people so u might get a range of 70 calories for your walk). I use the website below for a lot of random calorie burns. Normally I just try to be on the safe side an go with the lowest estimate.

Her are 2 other sites that would give you different results if you entered the same basic info.

Well, I also have an app that tells me the mph I am going and distance. I also have a HRM and I went on a walk and used both. According to the app I was walking average 3.5 for about 70 mins. When I just add it to MFP it tells me I burned about 300 and some odd calories. When I checked the HRM it said I burned almost 700 !!! Huge difference !! Sometimes I have found that MFP says sometimes I but. Way more or way less calories than what my HRM says.
I know you said you were broke and can't afford it, I was in the same situation. I was actually referred to amazon to get one. So I checked it out knowing I wasn't going to get one. I ended up getting one and only paid $25 !!! Best thing I have ever gotten ! I think if you are really into fitness and wanting to loss weight, it will be the best investment you will make. But this is only my opinion !
Good luck !!0 -
for all intents and purposes, there is no such thing as a fat burning zone. so ignore that.0

I believe it is called posey sport... I'm sorry I don't know for sure because I don't have it with me. But it was along that line.
I think your mom will ! If she see's that your are really wanting to do this, she will ! (lol) I always play the guilt on my mom ! Works most of the time ! And hey if she does get it then maybe she will get more things in the future !!0
