From a overall health perspective, If it's fast enough where you have a difficult time talking, thirty minutes is plenty.
However, you'll find after a while that a brisk walk won't stress you to the level of brethlessness, and you'll have to increase the intensity.
You may want search "target heart rate" on the net for more info.0 -
Enough for what? It is more than enough to maintain general health. It is not enough to train for a marathon.0
-
Hm...depends. Only you can determine that. I'd say if that burns enough cals to your satisfaction then maybe...however if its done everyday, your body will adjust to this quickly and will stop burning as much as it did in the beginning. For example, when I started my weight loss journey I thought pushing a stroller with a 2year old walking brisk pace for 40 min was such a huge task (back then this would burn me around 200 cals), which was good enough, but as I got slimmer this would burn me less and less cals, so I had to switch walking to something that was more effective in same or shorter time, at first i did running...and then I found Turbo Jam...I only did 20min a day which had the same impact on my body...Today I continue with Turbo Jam however I am at a level where I do 30min with 6lb weights in order to burn almost the same amount of cals....BUT I am very lean and my metabolism is trough the roof because I have enough muscle to process larger food intakes without keeping a calorie budget...While I try to eat healthy sometimes I just wanna "live a little" but a good work out few times a week keeps me in check...Good Luck!0

I don't think so, no. At 18 I was doing 2 hours of rowing a day plus about an hour of walking.0

Well, that's more than enough TIME to spend on cardiovascular activity. But I would try to do something a little more high intensity to get your heart rate going. Unless you are not physically able to do anything more strenuous.0

I have been attenpting to walk for 2 minutes, than run/jog for 30 seconds, then walk for 2 minutes etc.. for about 15 to 30 minutes. This is all the time I have. Than I do about 15 minutes of strength training. Does this sound good?0 -

What's rowing? And you must have had a TON of free time to be doing that much.0 -

Good that you're getting daily exercise--if you are trying to maintain weight or lose a couple pounds, 30 minutes a day should be just fine for you (provided you're eating sensibly), as long as the pace is challenging you a little (about 4 mph is a good, brisk pace).0 -

I am trying to lose about 10 pounds, I alread lost about 25 before I went on to MFP. I am 5'7" currently 136 pounds. I started out at about 160 pounds. What I really want to do is tone up a bit and I HATE running! When I walk though, I try every once in a while to add short 30 sec. to a minute long bursts of jogging. My other question is, do I HAVE to run to lose weight, or can I just brisk walk? I am walking pretty fast (Meaning my legs are slightly sore and I am breathing a bit heavy) and there are some hills. I walk about 2 miles every 30 minutes. So I am walking about 2 miles every morning before breakfast. What do you think? Thanks for the help!

Hello?
There are different forms of rowing - what that member was doing was probably competitive team rowing through a school team or something. Where I live, alot of people just row little dinghies to get around. Gyms also have rowing machines for people to either practice on, or if you don't live near water.
This is Wikipedia's article on competitive rowing to give you an idea.

Thank you so much! I have been worring that the only way for me to lose weight was going to be to jog/run, and like I said hate running, and I have asthma which doesn't help. Do you run? I am trying to go a bit faster each time, I seem to have hit a weight loss plateau, but I am going to keep muggeling through! Thanks for the imput!
Also, Do you think its a problem that I don't sweat much? People say that if you are truely getting a cardio wokout, you should be sweating like crazy. I only sweet in my face, feet, and bit on my underarms. Now, I am normally not a sweater, and I am always cold, is this going to hinder my weight loss? And do you think that even though I am not sweating profusely, tat I am still getting a good workout? Thanks again!0 -
What about something besides running (I hate it too! LOL), like bike riding. Or not walking, but hiking instead. I luckily live around the corner from a state park with trails for hiking, horseback riding, jogging, etc, and I take my dog there most mornings. It's more strenuous than just walking, bc there are hills here and there, etc, but it's not like I"m knocking myself out every AM, so I don't feel like I'm running a marathon. I love to bike, that never feels like work, even though it's a great calorie burn, so I try to do that a lot too.
But just to do something healthy, a walk a half hour a day is certainly not a BAD thing to be doing, and you're probably burning about 100 calories. With the addition of jogging for short spurts, you are actually boosting your metabolism even more. From what I've heard, that kind of interval stuff is better than just getting into a groove and running at a steady pace.
I don't like running either, but last year I signed up for a 5K for charity, so I was motivated. And my dog liked "helping" with the training by running alongside me while I prepared for it. If you can do something like that, the goal makes it easier to "like" running. ;-)
Good luck!! Being healthy when you are young is a good way to set a foundation for when you are older. It's easier to stay in shape than to get in shape, and the older you get, the harder it is! Good habits last!0 -
Actually that's all I do- Walk briskly back and forth to work. No other cardio besides that. But I do keep my cals in check and lift super heavy at the gym.
If I wanted more freedom with my eating and didn't lift so heavy, then my outlook on cardio might change.
Also like someone mentioned before,, enough cardio for what purpose? My sister is training for a marathon and she is out there running daily, which she needs to!
Me? I am just trying to maintain my weight and achieve more muscularity which has been very hard in the past for me but got WAY easier once I dropped cardio. So two different goals. Different approaches. You may need to decrease/ increase or stay the same depending on where you want to go.0 -

Thanks for this, I only want to lose about 10 more pounds, but what I really want is to tone up and buld a bit of muscle. I only lift 5 lb. free hand weights (cause that's all I have :-) And I have NO access to a gym. any tips?0 -

Thanks, I might try bike riding, my bike sucks, but oh well. Christmas is in December... :-)0 -
I don't think that 30 minutes of brisk walking is enough for anyone under 65. In general, we as a society are much less active than most of the rest of the world. I would try to find other activities as well that keep you moving...it doesn't have to be in a gym or on a track, but little things like yard work, a leisurely bike ride, taking the stairs instead of the elevator...it all adds up! We were meant to move, not sit in a chair in front of a screen for 8 hours a day. Just try to keep that in mind when you think about exercise vs. activity level.0

30 minutes of brisk walking 3-5 times a week is enough for anybody. You might not see GRAND results, but it's good exercise, so keep it up! I don't believe in taking any more time than necessary for exercising. Those three hours you spent rowing and walking, you could have spent with your family and friends.
If you want to tone up, try 30 minutes cardio/strength circuit training routines. If you're looking to become a runner, go for Couch 2 5K. If you want to burn fat, try 30 minutes of intense cardio instead.
For health purposes though (and weightloss), 30 minutes of brisk walking is great.0 -
I just read this statement from on line "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend exercising for 30 minutes a day for goot health and fitness".0

To lose that weight you need to create a calorie deficit which you can do by eating less food, increasing exercise or both. Since 10 lbs is not much to lose, you do not need a huge deficit. Because of this, you do not need to do tons of cardio or decrease what you typically eat to maintain body weight by a lot. Dropping your food intake by 300 calories a day below maintenance and walking to burn approximately 200 calories will create the same deficit as not dropping food calories but doing 500 calories of exercise. That's one example if you wanted to average a 500 calorie deficit each day, or lose 1 lb of body weight per week.
You do not need to sweat buckets to reduce body fat, especially if you do not have much to lose. After I finish my "gaining" muscle phase, I expect I'll have to shed about 6 lbs of body fat that I'll gain in the process. I do intervals of steady pace walking with short 1 minute runs and get about 300 calories burned from exercise.0 -
