Up day/Down day or Alternate Day Fasting

Please can anyone with feedback and experiences with Alternate day fasting (like that discussed on the BBC programme) post your information and findings here. Those that have tried it or are currently trying it your information would be very useful. I'm starting today and feel quite positive that this may be the way to shake things up.

I'm currently at 197lbs and still have plenty lose, I'm hoping to eventually get to about 10 stone (140).

I don't have any feedback yet because I've only just started, but I've just started my second week of 5:2 fasting (2 days fasting per week), I cut down to 500 calories per day on my 2 fast days, and try to net 1900 calories on my non-fast days (1900 is the level that MFP set to maintain my current weight).

I'd love to hear how other people get on with it. I split my fasting days up because I'm so hungry the day after a fast that I could never even contemplate 2 days in a row, and because I'm trying to maintain my higher activity levels and can feel the slump by the end of a day fasting. I eat my calories early in the day - I find a good breakfast of ham/bacon and eggs keeps me full for most of the day, where lots of little 100cal snacky meals do nothing to satisfy my hunger. I keep 100cal back for the end of the day and have a yoghurt before bed, because I struggle to sleep on an empty stomach. On non-fast days I eat as normal (I overindulged a little last week, but I'm aiming to control myself a little better this week, now I'm back to work)

If I weigh-in the day after a fast, I've found I lose between 1-1.5kg, but most of that goes back on once I start eating again.

Feel free to friend me - I'd love to hear how other people get on with this
  • Thanks for the reply..... BUMPING to see if anyone else has any experience of this.
  • Hi, I have been on this diet for two weeks and have lost 6lb, I find that it is fine in the week, but at the weekend is a real struggle, so have been giving myself an extra day after a feed day on the weekend so I can have a drink and feed my hangover the next day. I am hoping I will gain a little more self control and stick to every other. I am 11st 4lb now with a bmi of 25.8 and am hoping to get to 10st 7lb and a bmi of 23 and then I want to do the 5:2 diet to maintain my weight. Fingers crossed it works!

    I'm doing 3 DOWN DAYS @ 500 cal Mon/Wed/Fri
My UP DAYS are 1800 cal Tues/Thurs/Sat
And I have a MID day on a Sunday at about 1200 cal... that way I can recover from a few glasses of wine on Saturday night!!!

There is now a 5:2 group which I have posted my week 2 results to. Somewhere on this forum I posted my week 1 results, but I could not find it for anything. Basic summary: Week 1 I lost 4 lbs, week 2 I lost 3. I am currently in the middle of week 3.

I calorie cycle- Fast day, feed day, regular day, fast day, feed day, regular day.

Fasting (300 cals) has broken my 11 week plateau and I feel great on it. I even exercise of fast days and have had more energy for my 1 hour swims. So far- loving it.
