Fasting - Eat Stop Eat - What do you think?

Hi Everyone - I have been reading the book "Eat Stop Eat" and I was just curious to see if anyone has tried fasting and how they feel about it. Thanks!

Assuming you're doing this for weight loss:

I think that if fasting makes it easier for you to maintain and adhere to a caloric deficit over time, you should consider it. I think that if fasting makes it more difficult for you to maintain and adhere to a caloric deficit over time, you shouldn't do it.

Meh, I haven't found any research and/or studies that shows fasting helps with fat loss. Until then, the standard moderate calorie deficit works. Why F with it?

I, personally in relation to general fat loss, think that programs like this are glorified meal timing preferences. I couldn't do anything with rules because I get crabby and shakey when I don't eat when I want to eat. If having a program like this makes it easier for you to hit your calories then go for it.

Some people simply prefer to incorporate fasting in some form. Personally, I enjoy eating large meals at night and pretending that I'm reliving my fatboy days.

I think the ESE method is a worth a shot for those that struggle with long-term adherence and don't like to count calories.

When I have tried intermittent fasting in the past it has worked when nothing else has worked well (easy to stick to short term, but was difficult long-term when I just gave up on myself.. my fault, that). But then, I have multiple pre-existing conditions that make fat loss much harder for me. It may come down to me simply being a very slow burner due to those issues and not being able to "makeup eat" the missed calories most of the time. That said, I also want to do it for the health benefits and anti-aging effect. The evidence for that is very promising.

I have been trying to fast 2 out of 7 days a week back to back. So far I really love it. Portion control is my big downfall. Fasting reminds me of my small stomach and it puts me in control of my eating instead of the other way around. When I am not fasting, I eat between 12-6. I was on a plateau for many months and finally now I am moving the weight again. Some people need to eat more frequently whilst my body likes bigger meals but can go a looooong time without eating at all. I don't gain, but it has been really really hard for me to lose. I exercise quite a bit and eat very healthy. The only issue I have is portion control and IF really really helps me with that. I think even when I am to my goal, I will continue to fast at least once a week to keep reminding myself of my small stomach. Once I get this weight off, I will never put it on again!! This is a forever thing for me.

Correct me if I am wrong - but isn't ESE - where you eat, then fast 24 hours, then eat...etc?

If so, I personally could not adhere to that particular IF program. What I have recently began dabbling in as far as IF is concerned is the Lean Gains (I think it is?) approach, where you fast for 18hrs and feed for 6hrs. (Or how ever you decide to break it up.)

I find the 18/6 works well for me. I like to eat big meals. Small meals throughout the day don't work for me and if anything leave me feeling more hungry at the end of the day. With a 18/6 fast, I am able to get in my calories and enjoy a FULL meal without going over in calories.

    To each their own!

I've been doing intermittent fasting for 4 years now and it's without doubt the best thing I've ever done that's diet/nutrition/health-related. I don't even train or workout anymore and look like this ATM: http://gabbah.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/intermittentfastingresults1.png

For some years ago (4-5 years ago actually) I trained with weights concistently. Since then it has been very occasionally. Had a few workouts early this year but nothing in many months now. All I do is some walking, eating healthy, well, I don't eat especially healthy these days, I eat crap food 2-3 days a week actually... and the KEY: Intermittent fasting.

There are many protocols out there, Eat Stop Eat, Leangains, The Warrior Diet, etc. I have written a review/analysis/summary on Eat Stop Eat on my website if you want to read it. Me personally, I just fast for 16-24 hours, it varies, and then it a LOT for a few hours. Usually one BIG meal and then something small some hours after. And I feel completely satisfied. I'm never hungry during the days and it's super easy to keep the weight where I want it. Energy levels are higher both mentally and physically. For me IF is DA BOMB. ;) It take some time to get used to it however, first 3-4 days was very demanding bur after that it just got better and better.
