I see all these people with starting weights of like 130 or 140, and they're tall.. and they claim they're disgusting or gross or whatever...

And here I am, 5 ft 2 inches, with my highest weight of 228. If you're gross, what the heck am I? It's really sad, and seeing this one post today, of success stories, it brought a tear to my eye, honestly. But,I guess the same can go for if I was complaining about my weight, and someone who's 400 lbs saw.

Try not to be such Negative Nancies, people. Be thankful. :drinker:

I hear ya. I've been working on 50 pounds for 5 years! I will admit it comes off much faster with exercise. I just really want to be on maintenance NOW!

I guess everyone is hard on their own bodies. Plus, I guess it depends.....I've seen people who weigh wayyyy more than me and are a similar height but seem to look better as they carry their weight differently (mine is nearly all on my stomach), so I guess some people might feel bad about their bodies because of how they are carrying it.

I guess we just all need to support each other. :)

It's called body dysmorphia. It's called low self-esteem.

Also, some people may already be thin but want to work on their fitness levels and/or body composition.

So let's not try to judge others and focus on ourselves.

Yep - we all have our demons.
  • We all start somewhere and we all are our own worst critic. You are not gross, I am not gross.... But I was disgusted with where my body was heading and I decided to nip it in the bud.

Also, remember this is mainly a "fitness" site so we have all types of folks here. I am looking for metrics in addition to weight loss. Faster riding, more endurance, etc. But when I hit my target weight of 185(ish) I will be happy as can be.

I do understand what you are saying, but I think we all have our own view of what is overweight. I remember in high school, I was the heaviest of all my friends at 150. I look back at those pics and think, "Damn, I was hot!"

At 40, 150 doesn't look so hot. I remember being 256 and thinking, "At 150, I'll be a babe again." But it doesn't look the same (I'm 158.5 at my last weigh in).

I have a healthy goal weight in mind (140) which would make me "normal" in terms of BMI. I will never look 18, and that's ok. I'm not 18. I just want to look good for 40.

    Keep up the good work.

A lot of people find instead of focusing on your outward appearance, setting a goal that is not subjective is the best way to go about getting healthy - most times losing the weight takes care of itself if you're eating right and doing the right amount of exercise.

For instance - my goal is to get physically fit enough to start playing rugby again week-in, week-out. If I manage to achieve that for a whole season, then that is success to me. The exercise that i'll need to do to get to the point where I can do that will take care of the rest of my outward appearance in itself. Some people pick running 5k/10k/marathons/triathlons/etc as goals that they can attain that is purely objective as opposed to subjective because everyone looks at themselves from a biased perspective.

Everyone is here because they're on a journey in life. Some people are further along on that journey than others but everyone here knows that you have to start somewhere, and those feelings are probably the same for most people. So feeling disheartened because someone started at X weight and is down to X weight and you're not, is probably the wrong way to think about it. Some people just started their journeys at different points - but most of us here are in the same boat, surely? :)

i'm 5'4", and my worst weight was 147. i never, ever, thought i was disgusting. maybe i didn't prefer bikini season, but i was blessed with confidence still. it was my mom who always reminded me how fat i was, and i totally resented her for that. it did NOTHING to motivate me. so calling yourself disgusting won't either. you gotta call yourself a badass, and then go be one! i went on this journey because i want to be healthy. and HOT. and strong. i didn't whine about it to anyone. i just...(sorry nike)...did it. cut some brownies, did some burpees. i hate to oversimplify, but...

and when i hit my goal, i'll make a new one. maybe run a 10k, lift heavy, etc. then after that, i'll make a new goal. you spend your whole life trying to achieve better. you want to keep achieving promotions and raises at work, you (hopefully) try and improve your grades in college, you want better and better for your kids...

so yeah, 147 isn't 228 or whatever, but everyone's on their own journey with their own starting times and end goals. and i support anyone with a goal of losing 300 as much as the person who wants to lose 10. who cares? learn from each other, for pete's sake. it's my fitness PAL, not my fitness JUDGE.

    Oh no :noway:

Well I'm sorry for all the negativity you will probably recieve from this topic. Lol, anyways. I am classed in the normal weight range for my height (5'8.5) and I don't look 'like I need to lose weight'... This is all about fitness, and pushing myself to be the best I can be, I want to give my body my all and lower my fat percentage. I want to get fit and be able to run for what seems like forever and never say I can't but say I will one day! I can tell you that I didn't join this site to make others who have bigger obstacles to tackle feel like crap, I joined to find support and it's working so I'm happy, best to just work hard for yourself and your goal and not let other people with less to lose, or who are taller, or anything influence your happiness  :flowerforyou:

I think we all need to be more careful about the way that we comment regarding other people's goals, progress & points of view! I hope that no one refers to themselves as "gross, disgusting, etc" as it isn't a healthy way of thinking about ones self nor is it helping anyone who might have further to go than we do! Let's all stay positive, we all decided to get healthier so let's do it & not worry about the rest (:

My post wasn't exactly supposed to be negative to the other people. I'm just saying, be thankful for what you do have, be thankful you don't have 100 more lbs to lose like other people do. Be thankful you can lose weight like a normal person and not like one with a thyroid disorder. My point was just that, be thankful, and saying you're all disgusting isn't good for anyone. I didn't call myself disgusting, I just said, if someone who is 140 is disgusting, what am I at 228?

And none of us are trying to be negative towards your post, either....we're just pointing out that it isn't always easy for people to be positive about their bodies.....as you say, you think you need to work on your body when someone at 400 pounds could be saying, "Oh, get a grip, you've got nothing to lose".

Everyone's fighting their own wee battle whether they are trying to lose a few pounds or 100s.

    ^this^ Right on!

I will never be 18 again, and frankly that is a good thing, I just want to be as fit and healthy as I can. That was not working for me at 165 (5'4"), nor did it work for me at 140 (in the normal range). I want to be build my endurance and tone. I still look at weight, but it is not my driving force. I "thought" I was gross, but only to me. I know other women who weigh more than I do, but they amaze me with their strength and beauty.

i think people dont know how "lucky" they are because they've never been AS "unlucky" as others. i looked at myself at ~200+ and thought i was disgusting and a heffer but i see people on here bigger than me WANTING to be my size. truthfully when i was at my best weight i thought i was fat, and here i am 7 years later wishing i was that size again because i was beautiful and just didnt' realize it.

word for word how i feel. i was 130 in high school. thought i was fat. a year ago i was 203, i cried and cried, my boyfriend "let me go" because he couldnt handle my being so negative about myself. i thought i was disgusting, lost any shred of confidence. now i am 240, and even though i'm the at the highest weight i've ever been, i keep reminding myself that it could be worse. i've had to change my mindset in order to be successful. i've also learned to watch what i say infront of others. so many times ive been around friends who were smaller than me, say maybe 140 lbs, they'd say "i'm a pig." so what am i, an elephant? people are always going to be hard on themselves, but anybody with respect and awareness will choose their words wisely. i would never try to make someone feel sorry for me at the risk of hurting their feelings.

Everyones definitions of what they regard as bad/disgusting/etc are their own self-imposed standards, which is influenced by their own self-imposed perception of themselves.

Someone saying they're hideous at 130/140 is just the same as saying you're hideous at 400. The same feeling exists, the difference is just numbers.

And on that basis, most people are on the same journey, regardless of the starting point. Most people experience all the same feelings as well.

What people need to do is accept that everyone has the same core feelings and that's why people are on here in the first place, to continue to be motivated by sharing their experiences with everyone else.

Everyone starts somewhere. Where you start is irrelevant - it's the fact that you've started which makes us predominantly the same.
