Ive tried so many things, but really not sure what the best diet after thyroidectomy would be? I take cytomel 25 mcg twice per day, TT in Oct. 2011 due to papillary tyhroid cancer. Thanks in advance

I had a total thyroidectomy in 2002 and it was also cancer...the only thing that had worked for me is eating clean.0

I have personally never heard of a certain diet being preferable after thyroidectomy. I would imagine the best diet would be the kind they would recommend in a general sense....stay within your alloted calories, and keep your macros in balance. And obviously the less processed, the better...and no simple carbs.0

ask your doctor0

Mine is scheduled for October. My doctor suggested a balanced plant based diet. But that's more because of his approach to cancer and treatment. There's really no reason to change anything as long as you're eating balanced. Maybe a calcium supplement.0

Thanks, everyone. I eat a very healthy..mostly vegetable based diet, i dont care much for red meat, we bake everything, hubby and i dont eat sugars, limit caffienes, etc....I "know" what i should be eating, i just didnt know if anyone who had walked this road before me may have some insight.
My doc, my soon-to-be former endo, is no help! Ive asked his opinion in the past and he just said "go join weight watchers" I was at 135 then, I dont think at 135 I constituted joining weight watchers. I just wanted to know if there was a certain "plan" of eating that worked best for people in my boat.
I take a B12, vit D, and calcium daily0 -
I'd monitor your iodine and selenium intake and make sure you are getting adequate amounts of both, they're helpful with thyroid conditions0

Sounds to me like you're good. Maybe try restricting carbs? I don't know if you need to avoid soy or cruciferous veggies like hypothyroid people do, but this sounds like a job for Google. Or possibly for a new doctor.0

There are certain dietary concerns recommended for those with hypo or hyper thyroid, but generally those are around dealing with thyroid antibodies, which should die off quite quickly after surgery.
Iodine is used by the thyroid to produce T3 and T4, and is therefore not used after a thyroidectomy. It is however used by other body processes and hormone productions, but it's unnecessary to monitor for thyroid purposes once you don't have a thyroid anymore.
Calcium and selenium levels can be low, and are recommended to be monitored.
Make sure you get both your free T4 and free T3 tested regularly. T3 is the active form of the thyroid hormone, converted from T4, and can often be low in those post-thyroidectomy.
If taking your supplement in the morning, wait an hour before eating, and take any calcium and iron supplements at night (as they can block the absorption of the hormone). If you drastically change your fibre intake notify your doctor to monitor your dosage, as this can also impact absorption.0
