Hi

Im a 5 foot 9 guy who works out and lifts weights. Just last year I weighed 180 pounds and was muscular and pleased. However for no reason my weight began to drop and in matter of months I dropped 16 or 17 pounds and continue to lose. No matter how much I "think" I eat. Now I'm hoping with MFP I can get back up to 175 in a few months. I really hope it works. Don't know if just hitting the calories alone will help me gain that weight. Nice to meet everyone here.

Go to your doctor for a checkup

^^This... If you are having extreme or unexplained weight loss you need to get checked out.
  • Hey

I went to the doctors already and they ran tests for diabetes and thyroid and even white blood cell count and everything came back normal. But I'm still skeptical as I think something might be wrong, but undetected. Only changes I've made since last year is quitting soda and cutting down on sweet snacks like cake rolls and nutella. That's it.
  • Just in case you need to hear it three times go get a check up first thing

you being as young as you are it should be no problem to adding muscle mass
I cannot think of any reason you would loose 20 lbs plus
If the doc says you checkout ok then hook up with a trainer. eat lift lift eat etc. good luck
  • I have a friend that lost 30 pounds just by quiting soda. Its amazing how many calories you can drink in a day without realizing it.

I still think you should get a checkup as well.

    Congrats on stopping the soda.
  • Thanks Boostnerd

Yeah well I quit the soda not knowing I would drop weight, I quit since diabetes runs amok in my family.
  • I dropped around 15 pounds before I joined myfitnesspal. I would guess that 10 were from drinking Monster lol. The other 5 were beer.

My advice, best ways I have had to build bulk back (when I was younger I was light and hard to gain or loose weight) is to stuff as much protein down my neck as I could and lift the heaviest weights I could for 8-12 reps. Example...

    3 sets of whatever
    1 set 12 at 10lbs
    1 set 10 at 10lbs
    1 set 8 at 10lbs
If thats what my set looked like last week I would go up and end up with something like this. And every now and then I would shock my system by doing lighter weigh with a ton of reps or more weight with less reps just to shock the system and keep myself from hitting a wall.

    1 set 11 at 15lbs
    1 set 8 at 15 lbs
    1 set 5 at 15 lbs

Question: if you can do 11 at 15lbs, why wouldn't you increase the resistance when you drop the reps?

Um my own ignorance lol. Thats just what I know. You probably have a better way to look at it. All of my experience comes from being a MuayThai fighter as well as a Marine. (Neither are known for thier ability to bulk up) But I have occasionally had to bulk up and thats what I used. Part of the other reason that I always shot for 12 reps was for endurance. I was never willing to give up a bit of endurance if I didn't have to. That probably makes no sense. But thats what I know.

How old are you? Sounds like you quit consuming caloric dense products and now you aren't getting as many calories as you 'think' you are. I have numerous friends that have dropped 15-30 pounds simply by quitting full sugar soda. If you don't replace those soda and snack food calories with another source, you will lose weight.
  • Well Ive loaded up on peanut butter, milk, protein shakes, you name it, but I have a hard time maintaining my weight let alone adding to it.
  • Im 26 by the way, and I can understand how someone weighing 200 some pounds could lose 15 to 20 pounds by quitting soda, but someone weighing 180 losing that much just by quitting soda seems a bit odd.

So do this: Use as much weight as you can for say a rep count of 5-8, then do a DROP SET right after. Drop the weight to about a 1/3 and rep out as many as you can (probably 12 or more). This will help with endurance.

  • So using the same example...

    Instead of

    1 set 11 at 15lbs
    1 set 8 at 15 lbs
    1 set 5 at 15 lbs

    Use
    1 set 6 at 20lbs
    1 set 15 at 10lbs

So 2 sets instead of 3, or is that one "superset" and do it three times, and what kind of rest between?

It sounds knarly, I'm gonna try it for my next monday and tuesday routines :)

It's not unheard of at all. Depending on how much soda you were consuming per day. My buddy would drink at least 2, 32 oz per day. Let's assume that's about 750 kcal. In a month that's about a 6 lb loss from quitting soda alone.

Try the doc' again. I gained weight a few months ago (bulking) and I used the smolov program. Eat, Eat, lift, lift, lift, sleep, sleep, and drink plenty of protein shakes...I gained about 10-12 pounds of sold muscle. It was amazing. Planning on doing that again, soon. Good luck with your weight gain.

No more than a minute between. Just like when you do between Muay Thai rounds.
