So I have been on MFP for over 18 months now and have lost very little. I know I have "slipped" at times and have been really trying to get back on track. I have an open diary and try to workout 5 days a week. I am getting married exactly 4 months from today and my cw is 235.5. My goal this year is to be in "onederland" by the first week in December and have my wedding dress altered accordingly. My ultimate goal is to be 165-175lbs (I am 5'10) I am so tired of hating how I look and OBSESSING about it. It's not fair to me, my fiancee, or my family and friends. I really could use some honest (but not hateful) suggestions on what to do from those who understand/have been there. Let me know what has worked/not worked for you and/or what you think I am doing wrong.

I'm gonna catch a bunch of hate for this, but I don't effing care. I tried everything too, and nothing really worked for me but low carb. We're already friends, so just holler if you are interested but have questions. And, yes, my doc monitors my diet and I am healthy!0

9 pounds a week is a lofty goal but i wish you the best. my recommendation is LOTS of water, healthy amount of fat in the form of fatty fish, fish oil, flax, nuts, seeds, or avocado, and a 1000 calorie deficit. Get some sort of activity every day--walk on your rest day and take only 1 each week--on the other days aim for 30-60 minutes of activity. You can do this.0

You shouldn't have to feel like you are going to "catch hate" for that! I think it is great you found a plan that works for you!! I too started low carb about a month ago and love it! It helped me break my stall.0 -
after looking at your diary, the only thing I can suggest is maybe try not to eat so much processed convenient foods, I know for myself I can't eat those things or I won't lose. maybe try a cleaner whole food diet, or like sarahqt suggested going lower carb, I think it helps also because you won't be consuming as much sugar. and you don't have to go atkins style with high fat no carb as many people take it, try something more along the lines of south beach, where you still get good healthy carbs to eat. I know how frustrating it is not to lose, so just try tweeting things up a bit and see if it helps.

Have you thought about mixing up your workout to include weights? I know weights have always been one of two critical factors for me. The diet is essential. One of the ways I have learned to stay on top of my diet is to pack my entire day's worth of food and take it with me, snacks and all. I have also given myself a long term goal, yet smaller achievable goals in step to the long term goal. I try not to have access to cash with me, when I'm on an outing that may be tempting. My daily water consumption goals have alleviated alot of my cravings. These are my two cents. I hope it helps0

What has worked for me is either having all my meals around the same amount of calories with light choices and 100 cal. snacks or having my breakfast be bigger than lunch and dinner because that's your fuel to start your day off. And it doesn't look like you're eating anything of real fill-you-up substance. Maybe eat things higher in protein and less snack type foods. You can do this!0

thanks guys!! I did go low carb for around a month and only lost about 5lbs. I am serious about this change for life and am willing to stick with it. I know the key is consistency and I am ready to do it
p.s. i have given up sodas. haven't had a diet coke in over 6 weeks water, milk, juice, and unsweet tea only!!
p.p.s. i am a school teacher and we went back this week. for some reason, it's easier for me to be healthy when i am at school lol
p.p.p.s. how many calories should i be eating? do i just need to go by what mfp says?? do you eat your exercise cals back??

Followed MFP guidelines for my calories
Eating back only half my exercise calories
Setting 50% carb, 20% fat, 30% protein
Setting 2300mg sodium
Tracking carb, fat, protein, sodium, and fiber
Logging my water too0 -
Weigh and measure everything - portion sizes are a killer.
I notice you record very small exercise burns - 57 or 84 calories here or there. I wouldn't bother recording anything below, say, 150 as any margin of error would wipe them out entirely. Can you go for a power walk at lunchtime as well as your 10-minute dog walk? Do an exercise DVD when you get home from work?
Go with what MFP gives you, and it is deigned to eat back your exercise calories as they are not included in your activity level. Aim to 80% of them to allow for that margin of error, but as I've said, look to up your burn more before eating them back becomes worthwhile.0 -
Buy some digital kitchen scales and WEIGH everything. No cup measurements. You can pile a cup measurement high to the point where you end up with two cups but you can't trick the scales.

I am getting married in less than 3 months, and I have the fitting for suit set for the begining of october. I have lost 16lbs to date, an i know i am going to lose more. I know this because i am COMMITTED, I am DETERMINED, and I WILL NOT be beat by a craving or an excuse. I wont allow myself to be. YOU have to be commited to not only losing the weight for your wedding, but losing it for good. I'm not saying you won't lose weight if you are just doing it to fit into your dress, what i am saying is that you should want to lose the weight for the day, months, and the years after you take that dress off. That is why i am doing it. Sure i want to look good in my wedding photos, and yeah i want my fiancee to think i look great on our wedding day. but more importantly i want to look good and feel good for both myself and her from now until death do us part. I want to be around to enjoy her and our family for as long as i possibly can. and if i am 20-25 lbs lighter for our wedding....great....but you can bet your last dollar that on our 1 year anniversery, and every anniversery there after i am going to be at my goal weight.
Whenever you feel like it is getting to tough.. think of your future husband, whenever you think you can't...hear him telling you that you can, don't only picture yourself in your wedding dress in 4 months, think of how great you are going to look and feel 1 year into your new life together, and then 25 years into your life together. Thats what I do...i think about that each and every day, and that is what gets me that one extra rep, that addtional little push in my work out. Thats the best piece of advice i can give you. I can't tell you how many calories you need to take in, or what exercise are the best. But i can tell you that if you set your mind to something, and it is for the RIGHT reasons...you will be amazed at what you can accomplish.

The brutal truth is that if you're looking for a quick fix, it's not going to happen. It'd be nice to lose the weight for your wedding but what happens after? Do you give up and be fat and happy? Don't do this just for that one day in your life, do it FOR your life. You already know by now that having that future goal wasn't really enough motivation. You need to find REAL motivation and stick with it!
I'm not sure what I'm seeing in your food diary history. Were you not logging dinner or were you really only eating that little a week or so ago? The answer doesn't really matter I guess...my point is though that your goal should be to eat no less than what MFP gives you for a calories goal plus at least half of your exercise calories. And definitely don't plan on losing more than 1-2 pounds per week. More than that is unhealthy and unrealistic. And be really consistent with logging everything. If you lie about what you consume, you're only deceiving yourself.
P.S. Ok, I just noticed that your goal brings you to just over 2 pounds a week so it might be doable but it's just slightly unrealistic. The horrid reality of dieting is plateaus so you may get stuck at some point and not quite get there. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, just being honest to prepare you.
As far as what's worked for me.
1) consistency
2) eat my BMR plus exercise calories burned per my Polar FT4 HRM
3) do this for me and no one else0 -

i feel like you may not be eating enough. find out what your bmr is and your tdee... you want to go in between those number for your net. try www.fat2fitradio.com/tools to get these numbers and go from there. i eat 1600-1800 and i'm only 5'4" so i know you could eat a little more0

hey i'm going to have to agree with one of the previous posters, you need to eat cleaner. i see in your diary that you manage your calories but are eating things like pizza and other fast food items. 5 cups of raw kale has 175 calories, and giant pot of soup chock full of nutrients or a huge salad can be really filling; 175 calories worth of pizza, not so much.
in my humble opinion, (which could be completely wrong because i am not a health professional or a nutritionist, i'm just a fatty who just started losing weight a few weeks ago) even if you eat the same amount of calories, if the calories come from veggies and lean protein only, you will shed pounds faster.
take a biotin supplement to aid in metabolism.
drink coffee with breakfast in the morning, just a little. it gets me going and controls my appetite.
and you should work out, like every day!!! go to the gym and do an hour of cardio at LEAsT 5 times a week. then eat your main meal after the gym because your metabolism is up and you will burn the calories faster.
if you get late night hunger cravings you cant control, use a non caffeinated appetite suppressant like slim shots or lichi chews and drink a big glass of water.
drink lots of water. i noticed that sometimes i eat when i am thirsty because my body gets confused from habit. i crave fruit and candy when i am thirsty. stuff yourself with water! get some emergen-c packets for flavor. no crystal light! i used to like that stuff but it really dehydrates you and has too many chemicals. not good for you.

I'm 5'11" and only eat 1400-1500/day with 30 minutes daily exercise. If you're not losing weight, eating more will not help. The starvation mode thinking is a myth. If it were true, anorexics would be obese.0 -
i agree. that's one thing i think is weird people keep saying to eat more. you should eat 1200 per day no more if you are trying to lose weight by your wedding. you wont starve or lose muscle. just DONT fall under 1200 it's not healthy. after your wedding you should probably eat a little more and keep losing weight slowly.0

Okay so you have roughly 3.5 months to lose 36 lbs in order to reach ONEderland, that would put you at 199 and at 5' 10" IF you do some strength training along with diet and exercise wont look too bad on you, infact you may even LOOK 185. ( the magic of weight lifting :happy: ). So in order to reach 199 in december you would need to lose at least 9lbs a month. The more a person weighs the faster they tend to lose (if they are honestly working for it ) you could easily lose 10 to 12 lbs a month with good effort and diet. The question is how bad do you want it? You CAN do it and then you need to keep it. Eat whole grains, lean meats, fruit and veggies, drink lots of water. Ditch the processed foods and sodas/artificial drinks. Cardio and lift 3-5x a week (AT LEAST). You can be one HOT MAMA come wedding day. Good Luck :flowerforyou:0 -

I'd suggest eating cleaner - no chain restaurants or take out. Prepare food and snacks at home so you see what is going into what you are eating. Of course certain foods like 0% fat greek yogurt is prepackaged but it makes a great protein-rich snack. Same with cottage cheese. Lots of lean protein, veggies, fruit! If you have a sweet tooth, I'd suggest purchasing Yonana's which makes frozen bananas taste like delish soft serve!
Also, have you considered incorporating Insanity or P90x into your workout? Maybe those programs could help, especially Insanity because its heavily cardio. Maybe do Insanity and then 30 min at the gym - two-a-days might help!
That's a really lofty goal, but if you set your mind to it I hope you are able to achieve it!

This is a far more common mistake than people realise. It's very easy to overfill volume measurements, but a gram is a gram.0 -

This. I took a look at your diary going back several months. Your food logging is -- at best -- sporadic. You hardly logged at all during the entire month of July. On the weekends, you rarely log. This makes me question the accuracy on days you do appear to log and makes me wonder whether you are really logging everything you eat. it's impossible to know by looking at your diary whether you should be eating more.
To get to 175 in four months, you have to essentially lose 4 lbs per week. That seems like an extremely lofty goal to me. You won't get there by doing what you are doing. (And you may not anyway, but you will get closer.) I think it is totally reasonable that you could lose 20-30 pounds by the time of your wedding, which will still make a big difference in how you look and how you feel about yourself.
My advice?
1. Log everything you put in your mouth, every day.
2. Stop eating out so much. Nearly every day there is a Chick-fil-A, Wendy's, Jack in the Box, Dominos, etc. in your diary. (On the days you log.)
3. Eat more whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and protein.0 -
Wow.... as tough as some comments were to take, I appreciate them. I will admit that for the past 18 months (and years prior,) I was looking for a "quick fix" and seeing others lose weight made it more difficult for me. I realize now that there really is no other way to be successful other than eating healthy and exercising. Also, my fiancee loves me for ME and tells me everyday how beautiful I am and that he loves me. I AM DOING THIS FOR ME!!! I am NOT trying to just fit into my dress, I already do and it looks amazing, I am making a lifelong committment to being healthy. I am going to adjust my caloric intake and commit to working out more. Also, I am committed to prove myself wrong that I will always be fat.0
