Tough Mudder accomplished !!

Well I did it! On saturday I competed in the Tough Mudder Toronto and damn was it hard! All the hill training I did, did not help AT ALL for this race! It was held on a ski hill, and basically was going up and down black diamond with obstacles in between. It was 16 km of craziness !! The obstacles were super fun, and crazy- we were forced to submerge ourselves in freezing cold water, climb over giant walls, crawl through rocks and mud under barbed wire, and run through live wires- getting extremely shocked! There was one obstacle that looked like a slip and slid that we thought it was super fun, but really it had sharp rocks under it lol... I got hit in the leg by a big rock and torn a few muscles in it.. and had to limp the last 4 km of the race. There was barely any running since the hills were so steep you could only try to walk up them, and jog down ... It took us almost 4 hours ( since I slowed everyone down at the end with the limp) but none the less, I finished it :) It was a great feeling... and glad I can say I am a survivor!!

When you say the hill training you did did not help you...what would you do different if you ran again next year?

    Again, congrats!

I was there as well and I agree with everything you said (they had closed the mud slide obstacle by the time we got there because of the liner ripping and rocks being exposed) .... The incline of the hills were absolute HELL! I did plenty of hill running in my training but I certainly had not ran any hills like that!!! We finished in about the same time.... My biggest obstacle was the Arctic enema, I could not breath... what an experience! I can't wait to do it all over again next summer!

Well a lot of the Tough mudders aren't on ski hills- My friend that did this one plus the one in Ohio said the Ohio was a walk in the park compared to this one since it wasn't on a hill.. Since the hills are so steep you can only walk up them, and I had been running up hills here and there, but basically some of the hills take like 30 min to walk up, and I def wasn't walking on a steep incline for 3 hours training lol... Next year I am doing one in michigan and if I find out its on a ski hill again, I will be doing a lot of stair master or treadmill for an hour on the highest incline for an hour at least 1 x a week

Congrats on doing the Mudder! Some of my friends did it this year so I went and got pictures and yeah, none of the training you can do will prepare you for it lol Their's was on a ski hill as well. Although I still can't wait til 2012 to do it! Have you signed up for another one yet?

Wow...makes me wish we had one of them here.

Congrats on surviving. Looks brutal but so much fun!
  • Congratulations on your accomplishment! Very exciting!

You said the hill running didn't help prepare you. Can I ask what you would have done differently in training for this? What would have helped prepare you better?

My daughter and I are in the beginning stages of training. I think we are looking at a year out still. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. =) Thanks!

Well I am sure it did prepare me some, but even with all the activity I did I found it extremely hard- but then again, I'd like to see you find someone that says it was easy--- they don't want to make it easy lol... One of the girls I did it with seemed to struggle much less than me on the hills, and she told me that she spent the last month taking the stairs at her apartment (on the 13th floor) so she did that several times a day and it seemed to help a lot. The obstacles are challenging but you don't need to train for them.. It is really about getting through it mentally, your arms and legs are going to be covered in cuts and bruises and then you will have to use those parts to get through the next obstacle causing a lot of pain. There are tons of posters they put up reminding you its not a race, but a challenge. Go at your own pace, you will pass people, people will pass you, but its all about finishing it. People in my group brought gloves, but tossed them out, I didn't and was fine.
If you can go to a park and practice the monkey bars- that is one of the obstacles, I made it through that one without practicing but, most girls had trouble. I fell off the ring one, but making to the the end of the monkey bars made me feel really good. Next year I will try to complete the ring one.
I saw people of all ages do this race, and there is no reason that someone couldn't finish it - it may take them 6 hours , but they will eventually reach the end!
Honestly I have lost 50 lbs, competed in triathlons, and had a baby recently, and the feeling of accomplishing this was just as great as those accomplishments. I rec this for anyone and everyone!!

You will be great. just make sure you can run 10 km . Not even straight, just total. I did the warrior dash a few months ago, and it is very similar, and that was a breeze. Running a bit then an obstacle. Its great because it gives you a nice break in between the running. If you can run on rough terrain even better since its not flat roads.
