Plus Size Shopping: Woes and Triumphs.

First off. I'm 57 lbs along in this weight loss and feel so much better about myself. It feels great to not be limited by buying plus size anymore. That out of the way, here is what I want to get off my chest:

Why is it shopping in the Plus size clothes section always feels so... demoralizing? In the past I never wanted to go because either the stuff I liked was sold out in my size or the stuff was not cute. Why do we, women especially, set such store in sizes?

It has taken me a long time to figure out, mentally, that I don't have to shop in the "Women's" section anymore. I still think of myself as a size 22W. In fact I finally allowed myself to buy some new pants and had a great surprise: I'm a 12... a size smaller than I thought. I'm not saying all this to brag, but to celebrate. (It's difficult sometimes to allow yourself to be happily verbose about this stuff without seeming cocky...)

Wow, you're not just a little out of plus sizes, 12 is a long way down from having to shop plus! That is AWESOME!
  • Thanks Alice. :) Its been almost 12 years straight in plus... its nice to have more options again.
  • Weirdly, I find shopping a little bit terrifying when I am in normal sizes - there are just too many shops, too many clothes, I can't figure out how to choose between them all. Being plus size there are 3 places I can shop - it does actually make life a little easier lol.

On the downside, trying to get spandex workout shorts in a size 28 in the UK is almost impossible, and really quite annoying. It will be nice to want an item and be able to get it, rather than being limited by what my 3 stores have.

I think I've come to hate clothes shopping in general. Nothing seems to fit right no matter what size clothing I've been wearing! But I feel your pain on plus size; I cried in the changing rooms of Lane Bryant because I finally had to resign myself to the fact that I was a fat person. My bra that I bought there last October was donated to Goodwill this May. I think I wore it twice. =)

I did a blog post about sizes...and how a person can be SEVERAL sizes depending on the manufacturer. The main thing is to get an idea of what you are and try a couple different sizes on to see what you are in THAT particular garment. I can wear anything from a 16 to a 20 right now, depending on who made it.

hate being forced into black or garish colors in nasty fabrics - why in places like M&S do they have to have a separate fatties section with a completely different line of clothes - why can't they just do the normal pretty stuff in bigger sizes too? must say tho that there has been a big improvement in the past few years and they(and other shops - i just like M&S) are definitely improving.

my biggest gripe is fitness clothes...i want to wear lycra and proper sports clothes - more comfortable and cool than baggy t-shirts and joggers ... but xl is the biggest they seem to go and even then the selection is limited. Not exactly encouraging if you're trying to motivate yourself to get exercising. i'm going to start a line of clothing called 'fat and fit' adapting the shapes and sizes of fitness wear to flatter - top of my list would be a long length sports top that went to mid thigh - tighter fitting up top but flaring out after the hips to hide flabby tummy!

Just got into the non-plus sized clothing this year for the first time in my life! It's definitely different and sometimes confusing. I know mentally that I cannot shop in the plus sized store (Lane Bryant) but if I go into a department store (Dillards, Macy's) I always end up in the plus sized clothing section because that's where I've always shopped and that's the first place I go.

Kudos to you for your determination. It really does feel great to fit into S/M tops and size 10/12 pants.
