Can I count it even if I suck?

So, about a month ago I went roller skating with some girl friends and when I logged it, it was an insane calorie burn. I finally sucked it up and bought some roller skates so I could mix up my cardio (because pretty much I just walk a lot :P) But here's the thing - I really suck at it. I'm comically bad. I stumble and wobble and snails are crawling past me making fun of the "slow guy". Can I still log it as exercise? I can feel my body working hard - especially my core as I desperately try to stay upright. But I'm not good enough to really get my heart racing. Thoughts?

I find that I actually am working harder at things I suck at. Once you get it down, you stop wasting energy tensing unneeded muscles. Log it and enjoy it.

edited to add: Wow! This is maybe the most unfortunate wording in history. Leaving it as further proof that I'm an idiot. I have tears in my eyes laughing at myself right now.

I would still log it, just keep in mind that the numbers will be off.

Its a new activity, practice and have fun!

i would. just think of all the added calories it take for you to push yoursef off the ground lol. but if you want to make sure you see aboutaccurate, take off a few calories or subtract from your time. so if you went skating for an hou, only log in that you did 45 mins or if you burned 300 calories, quick add them yourself and only log in 200 calories.

Wear a heart rate monitor to get your actual calorie burn, then add your unique skating value to the cardio list. The number will drop as you improve technique, but may be offset by your increase in muscle tone and pace / time.

I'm gonna report myself and have the mods lock the thread so that it never sees the light of day again. I'll take the strike.

I grew up on roller skates (literally, I started skating at around nine months old), including competitive speed skating from age 18 months to age 14, and for awhile, I was skating for regular cardio exercise.

I, going at about 80-90 of power, keeping about a 11mph average pace, burn about 600 calories an hour. Looking at the default entries in MFP, one of them ("Skating, roller (rollerblading, roller blading)") underestimates, putting it at just over 500 calories for an hour, and the other entry ("Roller blading (in-line skating)") way over estimates it at around 860 calories for an hour.

So, if you're just sort of stumbling and not really being able to put in a full effort, either entry will likely being overestimating for what you are burning, but the first option will be at least be a lower overestimation.
  • Heck yeah you should add it! Just think of all the extra leg work you get from falling down and having to pick yourself back up =)
