I told my friend over the phone that I was weight lifting. She asked why I just don't use free weights to "tone" up some areas. -.-

This probably means i'm crazy but I had to bite my tongue and not to say something along the lines of "in another three weeks i'll be able to deadlift you"

But none the less i'll sign, and don't forget to throw in "spot reducing" in there somewhere.

  • As someone pretty new to everything, why is "toning" bad/a bad word? Would love an explanation :)

there is nothing wrong with the word. Some here get the idea that they must talk about using resistence exercise (weight training) as if they are all superior and talk about "lifting heavy".

when you do resistence exercises, whether with body weight or with weights at the gym, you can and will "tone" the muscles used.

Completely disagree! It's simple, descriptive and well understood. Also to be "toned" is a reasonable and sensible goal.

Floccinaucinihilipilification, now that's a stupid word that deserves to die. :)

Agreed... not sure what you see wrong with "giving greater strength or firmness to the body" (yes I'm a nerd and I looked it up in the dictionary), because that's what I'm going for!

There is an ab "toning" class at my gym and it kicks everyone's butt...even the guys and gals who lift heavy. So I don't think it is a bad word.

Agreed I hate the word boobies...

I've used toned before, and use to think it wa an acurate way to describe my exercise but have come to learn it doesn't mean what I thought it meant. That being said it was through someone providing a thoughtful response in another post that prompted me to do more research on the topic......

http://exercise.about.com/cs/weightloss/a/toning.htm Here is a nice little link regarding the topic.

Let's talk a pound of fat??!!! shall we :)

Aw cmon - panties? That's a GOOD word.

And what's the deal with airline food anyway?

I think "toning" in regards to women's fitness has a bad connotation these days, since when most people hear it, they imagine pink 1.5 lb dumbbells, and silliness like "less weight, more reps." Which then turns into "I've been following this toning workout I found in Cosmo but I'm not seeing any results! Whyyyyyy??!?"

So I will go ahead and sign this.

    SIGNED.
