Setting One Goal At a Time and Picking Rewards

:flowerforyou: So I've been attempting to lose weight for over ten years. The first 4 or 5 years of that I didn't even have a weight problem but now that I do I'm realize the importance of setting goals and rewarding yourself in the process. One of my biggest struggles in my weightloss journey is not having motivation anymore. At first my goal was to "get me a man." I know, so cliche` for us girls. Well, I found a man almost 3 years ago. So my next goal was to get fit for the wedding. OK I lost 30 lbs for the wedding. So, I've been married now for a little over 4 months and have very slowly started to gain. I decided that I needed to set one goal at a time and decide a reward (non-food related) to give myself when I reach it. That way I do have something to look forward to and a reason to lose.
My first goal and reward is pretty simple but awesome. When I can get back under the 200 lb mark (9 more lbs) I get to start getting my nails done again. I used to ALWAYS have gorgeous french tip acrylic nails. As I gained weight I stopped caring about how I looked and stopped getting them done. So that is why my first goal is to hit 199 and start getting my nails again.
What is your next goal and how will you reward yourself?

Maybe concentrate on being able to DO something instead of reach a certain point in time. Like- can you do pull ups? Can you run a 25 minute 5K? Can you do ten pushups? Can you reach the top of a rockwall? What are your personal records? Can you beat them?0

I TOTALLY get what you are saying! When I was on one of my zillion diets in the past I used to do that - reward my progress with little non-food related gifts, so to speak! It was fun - I learned to look forward to those things....I think I will do that again - great idea!
In the past it would be to buy a great book that I wanted to read, get a pedicure, go on a neat mini day trip or even just get a new lipstick or nail polish....it was something fun to look forward to and I hear what you are saying about gaining the weight and not caring as much....I have suffered from that also but no matter what, my hair and makeup is ALWAYS done!
Thanks for the post - something to think about! :happy:0 -

When I've been at a healither weight I have focused on more specific fitness goals but right now i'm so out of shape and far from a healthy weight goal that exercise goals are a bit difficult. once i'm a bit closer to my long term goal it will be easier for me to be more specific with goals. thanks for the idea :happy:0 -
OMG!! I said if I lose 10lbs I'll get my nails done too! Ha, I always use to reward myself with Starbucks, which was stupid, because I would get off track and drink like 500 calories. Then I would say if I lose 30lbs I'll go to the Louis Vuitton store and buy a purse, well I went and bought the purse, but never lost the weight, but now is different! NOW for every ten I lose I will get a mani and pedi. I use to get my nails done every two weeks, and now I won't even make an appointment until I lose every bit of those 10lbs0

I feel like i have always been trying to lose weight too. I just got married a year or so ago and have had the "fat and happy" complex ever since. Well now we are wanting to have children and my dr says I need to lose a lot of weight. So i'm so glad i found your thread about goals. I was wondering how you determine when to reward yourself though? i can't figure out what is a reasonable amount to lose before rewarding myself? any help?0

Decide how much you want to lose, and then break it down into smaller easier steps.
Me, I want to lose 40 lbs. So I would break it down to 10 lb increments with a reward at the end of each and the biggest and best reward at the end.
That way I am still keeping myself motivated to get to the next 10 lbs.
You get to decide what you want to reward yourself with. Just make sure it's something non food related. haha
Some people do pampering, some people do gifts, some people do trips, some people to activities (go skiing, canoeing, etc...).
Pick what will motivate you.0
