Chickpea query

Hi!
I am aware that chickpeas are a good source of protein but also contain carbs. My trainer has told me to avoid my carbs (fruit, brown rice,m sweet potato etc.) after lunch (other than veges etc) Would chickpeas be considered a carb in this circumstance?

Thanks in advance x

Your trainer would probably put chickpeas in the category of beans. When they said carbs, did they mention beans? If your trainer wouldn't have a problem with you eating black beans, they probably won't have a problem with you eating chickpeas or chickpea by-products (such as hummus).

I eat lots and lots of beans. Beans have nutrients, fiber, protein and yes carbs. Often when people mention 'carbs', they really mean bread, potatoes, rice, etc.

They are a starchier bean compared to others, but if you are avoiding refined carbs completely... chick peas are really nutritious and delicious!

Carbs are not bad in moderation, and carbs are not bad as long as they are not coming from processed foods such as white bread. Your trainer probably meant more along the lines of pasta. Chickpeas are in the legume family, which is a collection of very low calorie, nutrient-dense foods high in protein. I can't imagine your trainer would discourage you from eating this super food after lunch time, and if they are you might want to reconsider a new trainer (or consulting a nutritionist, who would be far more knowledgeable in this area anyway). Tip: Buy low sodium chickpeas if you're buying canned, and give a good rinse before eating to wash off some extra salt.
