Exercise with Injury

Does anyone have any good advice on how to still get in exercise while coping with an injury? I rupture plantar fascial last summer, ran the gamut of boot cast, PT ect and ended back in the boot last week for 4 weeks cause it didn't heel correctly and now I have additional foot issues associated with the rupture.

Up till now I have steadily lost weight and walked 2 miles a day (with pain of course). Now I am banned from walking and only doing things like biking where my foot doesn’t continually impact the ground. Has anyone had a similar situation? How did you get through it? Were you still able to lose weight? HELP!

I'm not a doctor, and it might be a good idea to ask your doctor what exercises will work for you, but it seems like something like an exercise bike or water aerobics would be good, low impact (or no impact) activities. Also weight lifting activities where you sit or lay down seem like they wouldn't put any pressure on your feet.
  • Hi Kari,
I am no doctor, so don't take my advice to heart. Swimming is a low impact activity that allows you to keep exercising and you would also allow time for recovery.
  • Swimming would probably be the best until you can put more weight on your legs...If you have a pool nearby, swimming laps, kicking on the wall, pull-ups out of the water, treading water, even running in the water would all be good exercises to do.

I am experiencing the same thing. Just recently had foot surgery (two weeks ago). I am also in a boot. Fortunately I have a total gym which can be used as a rowing machine. There is no pressure on my foot at all. It's not an intense workout which is what I'd like to be doing but it does burn some calories. Hope you find something that works for you.

Swimming would be a good option. Another option would be to use an upper body ergometer (an arm bike). The 24 hour gym I'm a member of actually has one there. It gets your heart rate up and lets your feet rest.

You have my sympathy -- If this boot doesnt work I am looking at surgery myself. And you're right, most options for excercise dont burn a ton of calories when you cant use your feet! I have 2 gyms near me, unfortunely no pools - which does sound like a great idea. I think I might try a membership for a month ...and keep the cals low :ohwell:
