What type of training do you do?

    My training...

Let me go back a bit:

April 15th, 2012, I was in more pain than was bearable, my lower back was a mess. An X-ray and MRI showed I have stenosis in two places (a narrowing of the spinal column which crushes the spinal cord), foraminal stenosis in two places (my nerves were being crushed, literally to death, I have permanent nerve damage in my right leg and foot that keeps me from being able to run or walk properly or balance well), 3 herniated discs and severe arthritis in my back, hips and right knee.

I was bed-ridden for two months, on pain killers, muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatories and heavy duty sleeping pills that knocked me out for 2 weeks because no pain medication was strong enough. For two months, I atrophied and fell apart. I lost 10 pounds (of muscle). I definitely gained fat - my clothes got tight, especially around the tummy.

I saw a doctors and surgeons and specialists to get me ready for spinal surgery. My doctor said he's never seen this much damage in someone so young, most people in this situation are seniors.

    My workouts started like this:
    - I walked: ten minutes at a time in so much pain, 3x a day, and then a bit more every day
    - I laid on the floor with my dumbbells and lifted weights over my head

I did this for a few weeks and felt myself getting stronger and the pain started becoming tolerable.

    I then progressed to:
    - more walking, longer walks
    - wall squats, toe raises, arm circles, squats and any exercise I could think of that wouldn't strain my back
    - I kept on with the dumbbells on the floor

Eventually, I weaned myself off my medications (against my doctor's suggestions), I improved my diet and started taking a natural product (glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM), I LOADED up on my antioxidants and fruits and vegetables. I kept working and doing a tiny bit more every day. I was terrified of surgery... Which has the potential to paralyze your lower half, and it's not permanent - I would end up going for surgeries the rest of my life.

After many weeks, I stepped foot in the gym again. I could only do 10 minutes on the elliptical at level 1 before the pain worried me and I would stop. I kept at it and a month later, 30 minutes wasn't a problem and I had no pain. I started lifting weights again.

    It's been 4 months now.

I have NO PAIN. I have NO arthritis. And I am NOT GOING FOR SURGERY!!! My doctor thinks I'm a miracle, lol. I think it's a miracle, and I have never felt so blessed in all my life! I still have nerve damage, but the only thing it keeps me from is running (which I miss, but I've NEVER been happier to just be able to walk!) and sometimes I lose my balance or trip and fall, but whatever, at least I can get back up again! :D

I still have all that damage in my back, and I have progressed so much at the gym and physically that it feels like a year since last April.

    Currently, I do the following:

    - Gym - 5 - 6 days per week, 35 minutes per session
    - 2 days lifting weights - arms and core
    - 3 days on a cardio machine - mostly elliptical (or bike or treadmill). My legs have the most muscle growth by far and it is all from the cardio machines.
    - I walk my dog every day for 20-30 minutes
    - I have a physical job (landscaping/gardening) 5 days per week
    - In the evenings I will sometimes do one of the following: Kinnect (Xbox) Your Shape: Fitness Evolved cardio boxing, Jillian Michael's DVDs, body weight resistance training (routines I have devised myself, mostly for my core strength) or the treadmill with 5 pound dumbbells in hand and various arm exercises (always on a steep incline), or yoga (DVDs).
    - Stretching!!! SO IMPORTANT for keeping my pain at bay!

This is almost the same routine I did before my injury took over my life, except I didn't have the energy to commit to so much. I only did the dog walks and the gym 5x per week before. Now, I feel I have too much energy sometimes and I need to burn it off. I didn't even have this much energy when I was a kid! Lol.

    Too much information... Whoops!

I started JC 5 days ago and you've totally convinced me to take "before" pix..TODAY. You look fantastic!

    Awesome!! Definitely do it!!! :D

I take photos from different angles:

    Front: muscle-man pose, flexing
Front: standing casually, arms at my sides
    Back: muscle-man pose, flexing
    Back: casual
    Side: arms down
    Side: arms overhead
And the one I posted here which is kind of coming from an angle.

Then I take the same set of photos every so often to see myself from different angles.

I can't tell you how glad I am you shared this! I've done a metabolism reset and am eating at 10 to 15% cut at the moment. Haven't lost any weight or inches, but people are commenting right and left on my "weight loss" this week! Wish I'd had the forethought to take pictures like you did. Thanks so much for sharing.

So funny that you say this...

I must admit, we all have our ups and downs, and I literally haven't lost weight since last year despite my constant effort and dedication. When I decided to eat more, I was skeptical but I realized I had nothing to lose, wait, I had fat to lose, but I had no success so I shouldn't be afraid of trying something new that might give me success! So, I went for it.

I took my before photos July 10th, and up until two weeks ago I didn't think I was changing at all. The scale wasn't, so I didn't think I was. Then I realized that the gym, and my routine, was getting way easier and thought that I must be putting on muscle... Two weeks ago, a couple of girls at work came up to me and were like, "Hey, we just wanted to say that we can see how much weight you've lost!" I laughed and said, "Actually, I haven't lost any weight at all." They said, "Well, I guess you toned then cuz you look awesome!"

That sparked something in me and meant the world to me. My spirits were being lifted. I started to think that maybe I was progressing and maybe the scale and the measuring tape weren't being nice to me.

I honestly had NO IDEA when I took that picture this morning that I was going to see such a difference when I put it beside the one from last month. No idea!!

TAKE PICTURES NOW!!! I mean it! Lol. I lost 65 pounds and all my progress photos (which were so CRAZY to look at!!!) are all on a dead hard drive, lost forever. When I took that photo last month, I honestly did not think I would see a change like that 6 weeks later. Never would have guess, not after such an insane plateau.

Take photos, the only person that has to see them is you, and that's the most important person of all!

Nice, even if it's not quite eating more to weigh less :P.
I'm looking forward to hitting my target or near enough, when I should be able to start eating a good chunk more to try and get some muscle on.
In the past I have given up on the diet, but still kept going to the gym religiously and found that I generally was putting on muscle and losing a little fat.

And yes, I always wish I'd taken 'before' pictures when I've lost weight - got to convince yourself you WILL look better and it will make you feel even better to show people the difference you've worked for.
Of course, never have. Sometimes I won't even look at the scales until a few days in!

Awesome Musiche! This perfectly coincides with my own decision! My MFP friend has told me that if I want to lose more weight I should eat more because the scale isn't moving for me either. I've been wrestling with taking her advice, but this morning I agreed to try increasing my calories so they never drop below my bmr and to add more protein to my diet. Your post is just the encouragement I needed to reinforce that my friend is absolutely right. Thanks and keep up the good work!

I am going to remember this post because I am right where you were and have been struggling for awhile trying to decide what to do. I've lost 65, have another 50 to go, but it is pretty much stopped (or slowed to such a crawl as to be almost non-existent) and I just can't do any more than I already do. For a couple weeks I tried cutting calories pretty severely (eating only 920 + half my exercise calories back each day) and that made NO difference. I'm thinking I might up them slowly until I'm eating more and swap one of my cardio days for another weight day. Or should I up them all at once? Hmmm....

This is Ahhhhhmazing!!! I am SO happy for you! :D

I have devised a theory of my own:

Think of where you want to be and what you would do to be that. For me: work out hard, eat right, eat to fuel those workouts. Ultimately: BECOME STRONG!

When I think of that strong girl, she's not eating 1600 calories and struggling through her workouts, it makes no sense!

Weight loss or not, a 5'8" healthy female burning 3200 calories, lifting weights and doing HIIT cardio NEEDS fuel to increase those workouts, needs to eat 3200 calories at least. So, I am living like the girl I want to be, not living like the girl that has 65 pounds to lose. No one can live a healthy life with not enough food. If you're not losing weight and you're not eating enough (for sure), then your body wants to be healthy. Let it be!

    Those days are OVER!

Hi! I gained a couple of pounds initially and went up and down for a bit. I kept my diet the same though (very clean eater, high protein, complex carbs, lots of fruits and veggies, no added salt ever), so I can't recall a significant bloat. It was gradual for me too, the calorie increase - I honestly struggled with it. I'd been eating a huge (and growing) deficit for years. So, my calorie deficit increased about 400-500 the first week, then added another couple of hundred on top of that until I finally reached my maintenance level which was only a couple of weeks ago. I was trying to eat at the maintenance level the whole time, but psychologically I wrestled with the guilt when I got home from work and had 1000 calories left to eat in the next 5 hours, lol. It was gradual. I am sure those two pounds were possibly bloat or water or something, cuz gaining two pounds of fat overnight is impossible, lol.

I DO notice bloating at certain times (being a woman and all), so keep that in mind too.

Last little tidbit of something that became important to me: throw out your salt shaker! I am serious, lol. I did it months ago and if I craved something salty, I would use a bit of low sodium soy sauce. I ran out of that and I can't even stand salt anymore. It became very apparent to me that we adapt to salt and crave it more and more the more we have it and it only screws with our weight, our blood pressure, etc.. Even no adding salt to anything, I still go over my sodium intake regularly on MFP, so really, we don't need to add salt AT ALL. I am ridiculous, but I went out for dinner last weekend and asked for no butter/salt on my snow peas. They salted them. I tried it, it was overwhelming. Rather than complain and wait for more snow peas, I wiped every single one off with a napkin! Lol, I'm so silly (and I don't like to waste food). :P

Patience! The one thing you CAN be sure of, is that if you're bloating because of a lifestyle change, than you ARE in fact changing! And if you're doing the right thing, then you can expect the right changes to follow. Your body is just a tad confused and trying to adapt right now. Give it time and you will win!

Almost anything that is a Lifestyle Change and NOT a Diet works! I did this BEFORE I knew the name or that there was a name to it...Eat More To Weigh Less. They put a name to Eating Right while reducing your intake a bit, and moderate exercise routine. Of course some of the Eat More people advocate extreme exercise. I just want to know why? Why the "heavy" workouts; what, where, how is ANYONE in THIS Country going to use ANY Extremes.

When we go to the Gym, we get upset if we have to walk more than 30 feet to go in, we won't even park 4-5 Blocks from our office for a cheaper rate, YET some will do 1+ hours on the Elliptical Machine or run 5 miles a day. The heaviest thing we lift all day is a bag of groceries but we want the kids to bring them in the house, but we will spend 2 hours at the Gym lifting heavy weights. AND it doesn't even take this to get FIT and/or toned...yea, it's wasted Energy and time. Just use common sense>>>Live/Eat/Workout in MODERATION, No "Catchy" names needed!!!

You make a really good point there! I don't weight less, I weigh MORE, lol.

It should say "Eat more to LOSE FAT and be smaller", right? Haha!

I am guilty of the same thing, I think we all just have that 'fear of failure' that gets in the way a lot. :/ I wish I had taken photos back in the spring when I was really out of shape (from some major medical problems) and atrophied and all gross, lol. But I honestly FELT gross back then and didn't want photos until I got somewhat better. Now, I wish I had those pictures of me looking like crap because the difference would be even greater! Lol. Ah well, such is life!

And this morning, I woke up and I "felt thinner", which is a weird thing to feel I guess, but some days I feel fat, other days I feel better. Today I felt good and decided to snap a picture. Surprise!

I am glad you're willing to try something new!

I think the some of the key ideas to eating more are:
    - (like you said) never eat below your BMR,

    - eat more protein (the rule I followed was at least half a gram of protein per pound of body weight, so a 200lb person would aim to eat at least 100g of protein per day),

    - eat clean, unprocessed, natural foods as much as possible, eat whole grains.

    - and mostly: GET YOUR BURN ON AT THE GYM! Lol. Push, push, push. If you aren't seeing progress at the gym, then you aren't fuelling muscle growth and those calories will get stored as fat (which, to your body is a good thing, to us, no it is NOT!). Lift weights, do high intensity training when you do cardio (for max muscle growth). I'm not sure why cardio doesn't get any props for muscle growth, I get great results with my legs from just cardio (my target HR is 70-80% with high intensity bursts in the 90% range, eek!). Be consistent with your routine until it stops working (you've adapted) and then switch it up. I like to switch up a few exercises every few weeks but keep it mostly the same. Take a few out, put a few new ones in. I'm a creature of habit, but I recognize the need for variety for progress, so rather than change my entire routine, I stick with mostly the same and gradually change it over time (same like what I'm doing with my body!). :D

You will do this, just stick with your guns, and BE PATIENT. If you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that you're working your *kitten* off, then yeah, you will see it eventually. Just keep your head in the game, keep learning, and keep going! :)

Lemme know how the change goes! :) If you have any questions, ask away! Or if you get discouraged, shoot me a message! :)
