NSV?

So. After several cups of coffee to get my motivation up, and dithering around for another ten minutes trying to talk myself out of the "it looks like rain, maybe I should just skip it this morning" attitude -Day two of what I'm starting to think of as "Danielle's Daily Loop of Torture" done. Why torture you ask? My route is a loop around my tiny community that totals 1.1 miles. That's not far, not far at all, it's child's play for people who are in any sort of semblance of shape. (Not I, oh no) But here's how my mile works.... Brisk walk up the hill, jog til I feel like I may be having a heart attack, back to brisk walk, jog til heart attack, brisk walk over and over again etc. The goal is to get to run point eventually for this whole thing, but don't hold your breathe. I'm on the home stretch this morning, and the wind picks up, every particle of sand within four feet of me flies into my face. Eff it. RUN FATASS!! RUN!!!

Now I'm sitting in the house, another cup of coffee in my hands and telling myself tomorrow will be easier while my face fades from this strange shade of purple. Probably not, but I'll do it anyway. There's my NSV. I did it today, and I'll make myself do it tomorrow, and the next day and the next day until my mind twists itself into thinking it actually enjoys it.

    You did it! :flowerforyou:

Years ago, I used to do a running route that started on a hill. Eventually it dawned on me that I could start on a flat stretch to warm up and hit the hill about 5 minutes into the run. Made it a lot more pleasant and I had fewer days with achy calves, too! You might want to consider starting your loop at a different point, or reversing it now and then so you hit the hill when you're warmed up. A lot less likely to injure yourself with a sprain/strain that way.

Not a dumb question at all!

NSV= Non-Scale Victory. In other words, any measure of your success that doesn't involve weighing yourself.

Those first runs are the hardest. And I think the walk/run/walk/run things is the way to go. It's how many indigenous runners go long distances.

    Congratulations!

BTW - I was doing that. And then I started walking. I now walk faster than I used to run.

Awesome. I realize Nike said it first, but it really helps to Just Do It! Whenever I find myself giving excuses, that's all I need to say to myself.

Great attitude! And great NSV! I wish I had the guts to try running...my brain still thinks I am too heavy to try it. Maybe I should just invest in a good pair of running shoes and just do it!

I find I get to the point of oh-god-I'm-going-to-die much more slowly if I focus on my breathing. In through the nose, out through the mouth, nice and slow.

That said, congratulations! The next one WILL be a little easier, because you'll be a little bit stronger.

Great job! However just starting out running, I learned this the hard way...I got to where I could run 30 mins straight and I was building speed. But, within a week I was barely running 15 mins straight...I had to slow it down. My body wasn't getting enough time to re-cooperate and now I'm having trouble staying away from running, I love it. But, great job! Just make sure you don't take on too much too fast or you'll be like me...having to build up again...this time gradually. lol. They say just starting out you'd wanna run about 3 times a week and gradually build it up more but if your starting not to run back to back days. (: I don't want this to sound like I'm belittling your NSV because I promise I'm not I know how exciting it is to reach that 1 mile and when you reach 2 you'll feel twice as excited! Good job, keep up the great work (:

My thoughts exactly!!! Your body needs time to heal. Look up the C25k program it helps beginners!!! But you are doing an awesome job and should be sooo very proud!!!
