I'd say with 1,000 cals a day you're going to lose water weight fast and then have a very hard time shedding real weight. I'd up it to at LEAST 1200 cals and give your body what it needs. 1200 is about the bare minimum your body can run on, anythying less is setting yourself up for failure. I have lost 13lbs in just over 20 days by cutting out wheat, eating between 1200-1300 and only exercising about 3-4 days a week.0

I lost 45 lbs in 6 months by limiting my calories to 1000 or less. And I was a 255 lb man, so 1000 calories was very little food. I was tired and had trouble concentrating on my job. I did however lose alot of weight, especially around my face and neck. Experts will tell you that you should have 1200 calories though, to lose weight in a healthy way.0

there is really a hard limit on how fast you can lose fat.
now, if you only want to lose weight.. fine. go for it. heck stop drinking liquids.. its the fastest way to lose weight.
but if you want to lose fat, you first have to recognize some basic biological truths... among them is the fact that your body will only lose fat so fast, and a huge deficit will only result in lower glycogen stores and lean tissue loss... so sure the scale reads better, but its not real fat loss, you dont look any better, and it all comes back as soon as you eat enough to restore your glycogen stores and have enough water.0 -
Depending on how tall you are, it's possible to get enough nutrition on 1000 calories per day. But with so few calories it would be wise to stick to whole foods and not waste any calories on junk or artificial foods to prevent nutritional deficits.
But with so little to lose, losing more slowly might make it easier to transition to maintenance once you've lost it.
Good luck with whatever you choose.0 -
im 5ft 5 and weigh about 12st 5 the last time i checked. think im just abit impatient as i tried every diet in the book and grown tired. im aiming to do pilates 3 times a week too to tone up. maybe i will up them or start taking multivitamins so i dont get deficient in anything. x0

Why don't you first try doing it the way MFP suggests before you decide to do something incredibly over zealous?
FAT loss takes time. It really does. You didn't get this way in a couple weeks, and it surely won't take just a few weeks to undo.
At 1000 calories a day, you won't be doing ANY toning up or strength exercises really. Your body will see a large calorie deficit and react accordingly. It will assume you're going on the long run for low calories and start tearing down tissue that uses most calories (your muscles) in favor of lowering caloric expenditure.
So, you will lose a lot of water weight and muscle weight mainly. Eventually fat will start coming off but you'll stall and be skinny-fat as its called.
Finally, by choosing "Starve to be skinny!" you are doing NOTHING to fix what got you bigger in the first place. As a result, once you resume eating again, you'll quite quickly regain ALL of the weight and sometimes even more.0 -

Most vitamins have to be taken with food to be properly absorbed. They aren't a patch for not eating.0 -
Many vitamins need to be taken with food to be absorbed, especially fats.
You will lose a lot of weight on 1000 calories. A ton!
You will also eat away any muscle you do have and you will slow down your metabolism. When you reach your goal weight you will most likely be skinny fat and when you try to eat normal again you will gain weight and gain weight rapidly. Your body will be storing every calorie it can get it hands on into your fat stores because you starved it the first time and it'll want to be prepared for when you do it again. You will also probably mess up your hormones and can damage thyroid function. Not to mention energy levels, depression, hair loss, skin dryness, and a host of other problems. Remember, your body doesn't like to use its fat stores but it will if your nice to it, it REALLY doesn't like it when you put a boot on it's neck and force it. And it will pay you back.
Aka don't do it.0 -
so eating just an extra 200 calories would make it fine? as theres not alot of difference between the mfp recommended (1200) and what im doing. can i just ask what is skinny fat? thanks for all the replys everyone, gives me useful advice0

Dude, you're pretty smart for having a duck face! :drinker: Agree wholeheartedly. It's a bad idea OP. FAT loss is what you want, not water and muscle loss. You need to fuel your body properly if you want to lose fat and keep lean body mass.0 -

I think 1200 is too low as well, unless you are very sedentary or morbidly obese or have some medical issue we don't know about. Figure out what your TDEE is and eat 20% below that. If you don't want to do that, at least, eat your exercise calories on top of the 1200 figure.
Skinny fat is the term people use for people who are small, but soft and jiggly. They look fine in clothes, but they are generally not happy with how they look naked. Lift weights and eat appropriately to avoid the skinny-fat look.0 -
Did any of us sit and fret about how fast we could GAIN weight? So why do worry over how fast it can be lost. It will come off when it wants to, all you can do is follow the plan set for you, assuming you are working with a realistic goal..and stick with it.
I'm the worlds slowest loser...my loss has averaged .8lbs a week. However it's is off and that's all that matters. How much time is our health worth? 5months 10months 1yr of patience...seems like a drop in the bucket when you compare that to how many years you will be alive or how long we lived with being overweight.0 -
oh right - yeah not a good look! lol how do i find out my TDEE?0

This is long, but it'll tell you everything you need to know. This works, and you'll lose fat instead of muscle. Best wishes to you!!

I know my calories were not a third as high as they are now when I was at my heaviest.
Reading this article made a lot of sense to me, sounded a lot like me except the actual foods she was eating.0 -

You will be surprised how quickly that can add up...1000 calories seem like you will eat like not very much....Sometimes I log my meals and I'm like whoa! I Ate that many calories!! I think you should just take your time...slow and steady wins the race...I go over my calories sometimes but as long as I am losing and not gaining...it doesnt very much bother me.....Take your time and get your weight off and get it off for good insteat of yo-yoing....Like someone said earlier...If you could just make your diet very similar to how it will be when it is time for you to maintain...the better...0 -
think i may up my calorie goal then and workout 3 times a week to start with. thanks everyone0

Most people here will agree that 1000 is too low, and some will even consider 1200 too low. You mention that 200 more doesn't seem like that much so why not stay at 1000... if you go from 1000 to 1200, that's a 20% increase in calories. It's enough for a good snack, or an added portion of protein to a meal, which is VERY important if you are eating a low calorie diet. 1200 vs 1000 isn't going to slow down your progress, and it will give you more of what you need.0
-
i havalways been told and heard doctors say it on tv never go under 1200 calories a day0
-
you will feel sick after a while...I actually did this by accident though and started getting stomach pains that would not go away for weeks. It was a nightmare I lost 20pounds QUICK but of course gained it all back.0

Chances are you didn't gain it fast, so you'll just have to be patient. Eat more, make healthy changes to your diet and exercise habits, and you'll see steady results that you'll be able to maintain long-term.0 -
most people i see who do diets and rapid weight loss programs just pile the weight back on the body slows down and the weight does not come off people then just go back to weight gain. It has to be a lifestyle change there are no easy or quick fixes.
I am trying to stick to 1500 to 2000 calories a day I am 6ft 3'' with large frame and doing exercise daily which is cycling and walking with some exercises built in.
If i want to have a nice meal at some point then so be it I want the weight to come off slowly with exercise and health eating.0 -

Keep in mind your BMR/TDEE is also based on your weight, so as you drop weight you need to recalculate this and it will go down. The smaller you are both height and weight, the less calories you can eat. Also make sure you picked the right activity level.0 -

the problem you have is that you want to 'diet' instead of make a lifestyle change...0 -
You are certainly free to do what you want, but eating that way is certain to mess up your body. Personally I like to eat and feel satisfied so I eat 1900-2000 calories per day and exercise daily. I've been consistently losing 2 pounds a week since June.0

2 pounds a week! thats great what kind of working out do you do?0 -
I walk 8-9 miles daily at 5mph. Split into 2-3 walks.
I also strength train at the gym 3-4 days a week.
On off days from the gym I hula hoop for 30 minutes.0
