If you don't enjoy it, why are you doing it?

It's weird, I normally love skating. But when it gets fall/winter time I just never want to do it. And I have to today until Monday, because Monday is the competition.

We all go through ups and downs, it's completely normal. But when the downs become abnormal, it can become dangerous. Nothing against all of us fine, well-intentioned forum folks, but there really is no substitute for a trained counselor or psychologist when it comes to matters like this. Only he or she will be able to determine if you're in the midst of a normal "swing" or if the issue is bigger - and if it is, some options to help you through it.

In the meantime, here's what I tell myself when I get down (maybe it will help, maybe it won't): "Stand up tall and pick your head up." Literally. Sometimes that's all it takes for me to push through whatever's bothering me. Don't know why; could be a health/posture thing, could be an emotional thing, could even be a new age tai chi thing for all I know.

Anyway, I truly wish you the best of luck, and hope you find an answer so you can get back on track :)

Why not just skate for fun during seasons you want to do it? Is the depression caused by skating, or is something else causing it?
  • sounds like you are depressed because your feeling obliged to do something you dont want to....just remember you come first, and its okay to say NO :)

I'm the same about going to the gym. So I tend not to go much or when I do, I dont enjoy it so I go out of necessity. You could try antidepressants as they can help if you have depression. Sometimes, stress can cause depression/low mood or similar symptoms so make sure you can relax as much as possible & resolve any issues that might be stressing you out. And I guess the first place to start is to not get stressed out about being depressed! There are a load of websites that can help you identify & tackle your symptoms of depression. There are also basic questionnaires you can do to find out if you really are depressed & if so, how badly.

Sometimes I don't want to run or go to the gym but after I get started, the endorphins kick in and it's enjoyable. I take the Nike motto, "JUST DO IT"
