So--I was locked in the health club-after hours Friday night. I posted about it.

And today I was offered compensation! I pay no dues or fees for basically the rest of the year. And a 1-hour free training session.

Here's the thing--I JUST fell in love with the idea of weight-training. BUT-newly--back at the gym--less than two weeks--after months -years hiatus. Day 11 consecutively on the Elliptical-10 -20 pushups---moderate bike riding---that's about it--so far. I Never thought I would include (apart from the machines) weights--but I am gonna do it

I get---

1. 1-15 minute orientation at one gym location--
2 . 1-1 hour training --at the compensating gym----
3. 1 45-minute fitness evaluation---they give everyone

I can't afford a regular trainer. So this is gonna be it! Except for sporadic assistance now and then-- I am on my own.

How do I maximize these segments? I want the focus to be on weight-lifting. What do you suggest --I request the trainer to do for each segment---for a complete novice---with the idea-- subsequent workouts will be self-designed.
I have NO idea. Other than--show me how to lift--so I do not injure myself.

My advise would be to look at the link below. Buy and read the book mentioned. Tell the trainer you want to be trained on those lifts, and that you want no ther advice.

Ask for nothing but weight training, cardio is easy to get cycle, running ect machines... so ask for the areas you want to focus on, ask how often you should do the sets and ask when to increase your weight. fitness eval.. hopefully includes nutrition.. take it all ask all the questions you can think of write them down as you think of them. But for the most part ask for the weight training have them write the number of set and starting weight and what mucsle is it working on... take full advantage.... awesome deal, not sure how you got locked it the gym but good thing they are offering compensation... blessin

Have a trainer instruct you on proper form with the basic barbell lifts - The squat, the deadlift, the clean, the overhead press, the barbell row, and the bench press, along with the kettlebell swing. Once you have the form down for those basic exercises the world (of the gym, anyway) becomes your oyster as you can start following lifting programs such as Starting Strength and Stronglifts that will lead to results that will make what those people working out at home to videos have accomplished seem like nothing at all.

does your cell phone take videos? if the trainer allows it take vidoes of her lifting with the proper form so you can review it.

Figure out what you want to do(IE barbell, dumbbell, body weight etc) and go from there. Have them show you exercises you can do with that equipment and make sure you are comfortable doing them.

Have the trainer write up a plan with those exercises, and go from there.

    Thank you you ALL!

I did not even know the language to use--ie:--- -dead lift---the clean--the overhead press, let alone equipment--barbell --dumbbell--kettle-bell swing...and suggestions are excellent----write out questions---
    get video....if possible--focus on weight training only---etc.

Glad I could draw on the collective wisdom of the experienced weight-trainers
