new trainer...should i ditch my old routine?

so today I invested in a personal trainer. We sat down and talked about my goals, my weight, my set backs, and right now my scheduale looks like this

( this is what the trainer gave me )

4-5 times a week
5-10 minute stretch
30 minute circuit training
+
10 minute warm up
50 minutes cardio at goal heart rate
20 minute cool down
10 minute stretch

on my off days is it still okay to do my Zumba and aerobic workouts? I really like them. I forgot to ask him while he was sitting in front of me. lol

It sounds like a pretty intense plan so if you still wanna do Zumba once a week, see how you're feeling first. If you're tired or start getting sick all of the time then I would just stick with your trainer's plan. You don't wanna overtrain and get sick or injure yourself.

You want to do more than what your trainer is having you do, not less. In my mind, this can't hurt! If you've got any doubts run it by the trainer the next time you see him- that's what he's there for. Best of luck to you!

Hopefully that's dynamic stretching at the beginning and not static. And IMO, over 2 hours a day of training and exercising is kinda overkill.

I would think that you can do Zumba or aerobics as your 50 minute cardio and then maybe do your warm up/cool down on the elliptical, bike or treadmill. I don't think it would hurt at all to do it on your "off" days just make sure you give yourself at least one day to rest.

Not if the plan is for 4-5 days a week. More isn't always better.

Please clarify, is that all one session or are you alternating between the two?
  • With all of this aerobic exercise your trainer is planning for you, how about doing some strength training two days a week. Then have an off day to rest.

Your body will tell you how much exercise is too much. Be sure you do stretching as well to keep your body limber.

My trainer gave me a different exercise program almost every week. I'd then duplicate it on the days I didn't exercise with her, and do cardio twice a week.

That is a super intense schedule.... My trainer only has me doing 30 minutes of strength and 30 minutes of cardio intervals three days a week. On two off days I do two hours of low intensity steady state cardio (usually five or six mile walks). If I was doing your schedule I probably wouldn't have energy for anything, let alone more high intensity cardio!!! I guess see how you feel and if you can do it, why not? But just be careful you are fueling yourself well enough for that routine.
  • Listen to the trainer and do NOT over train.

Your off day workouts are basically cardio. I don't see a problem with continuing them as long as you feel you have the energy.

    no thats ones session.

Thats a lot for one session.. I mean if you are doing weights properly(to failure) then you are not going to want to do cardio for 50 minutes.. let alone add on a 20 minute cool down.

I'd ask the trainer if he/she can tone down the program a bit... cause that seems a bit over the top.

My trainer gives me a strength training program, and leaves the cardio up to me. I generally wind up doing 3 days weights, and 3 days cardio... and never on the same day!

I suggest shopping around for trainers. I work with a trainer 2 days a week for no more than 45 minutes per session then I do 3 days of 45 minutes of cardio the rest of the week. And let me tell you, she is a good looking, fitness competitor and by the end of a session of a 45 minute session - I can't wait to leave. imho, you will burn out quickly trying to dedicate that much time.

^^^^^ Well said. I would say alternating between the two everyother day would be more effective and more sane and enable to have more intensity.
