Hell yes it works. I thought I had reached a plateau...I was exercising, but I wasn't watching my portion sizes, I just tried to eat better...When I started writing down what I was eating, It was a miracle that I had lost any weight at all. Just writing down what you eat, and trying to stay in your calories, will work wonders.

I've lost 18 lbs in 1 month. Primarily from watching my calorie intake. It's VERY important.

It's virtually impossible to lose a significant amount of weight without losing some muscle along with the fat, but you can try to minim ize the muscle loss.

You do want to stay within your calorie goal so weight loss will occur.

You also want to make sure that you eat sufficient protein every day. MFP gives you a very low protein goal. I find it's better to aim for about 1g of protein for each pound of lean body mass. You can customize your settings so your goals will show this amount or just aim for anyway.

Some strength training will also help.
