I've had a couple of bouldering taster sessions recently and loved it. i'm planning on starting a regular weekly session with my eldest daughter soon, but this will have to wait until after the start of this coming school year (we need to see what after school activities she will be taking this year before we commit to a specific bouldering night).0

Why this forum may be the push I need! I used to do a good bit of Alpine climbing and trying to get back into it, I will have to loose about another stone before I could consider heading back to the alps or doing any other technical climbs.
I've have planned to get back to hiking this weekend, to start to increase my mountain fitness.
I haven't been a very active member of this site but feel free to add me - I really need to start logging again and focus on loosing another stone.

I've only just taken it up and am already quite enamoured with it and would love to have more people into it on my friend list. It's great that people on here are supportive of each other but it'd be nice to have friends on here with more in common that just our desire to shift some flab!
I've started with bouldering but am looking into rope wall climbing (lead climbs?) as well. I started it as I hate exercise and wanted to find something I could get into that would be fun, interesting and provide me with a workout. This is definitely doing that. Last week I had muscles aching I had no idea existed!!0 -

It's a great way to get fit! There's nothing quite like clinging to a wall to make you use your muscles!0 -

Stoke-on-Trent. There is a bouldering center called Awesome Walls, they are a franchise and have a few centers in midlands/North West. The Stoke one is closest to me. There are a couple of other centers around which we may investigate if the times are not good for us at Awesome Walls.

Yup. There's a rope climbing wall in Crystal Palace (very near me) and the bouldering I do in at The Arch Bermondsey and will be trying the London Bridge branch this Sunday.0 -

I actually find being in the mountains easier than on a wall, I think its the views that help get you through it. Plus you can very easily clock up 6 hours exersize without noticing. I've also found there is nothing better than booking a trip to keep your training focused – there is no way you will skip a training session if you know you have a forthcoming trip in the diary.
Theres loads of intro climbing trips you can do where no experience is needed but you can experience snow and ice . . . . . And a great sense of achievement! If anyone is interested let me know and I'll recommend a few great trips (be warned though they are not cheap).

After dabbling little bits over the last couple of years, I've got back in to it in the last month.
Having gone down from 16 stone to 12 or so at the moment has certainly helped .
Feel free to add me.
Just bouldering so far - the only local friend I had who's in to it has just moved down South (I'm West Yorks), but may go along to a top/lead "singles night" to find some belay partners - suspect my bigger wall endurance will be a bit lacking.
Not done anything out door yet, though have had some invites from friends around the country.0 -

The idea of outdoors freaks me out a bit. I'm quite happy with the comfort of having crash mats below for when I fall/give up and push off the wall!0 -
Thankfully (or perhaps concerningly), I have fairly high fear thresholds. Though the first time bouldering inside when I couldn't climb down from the top and my hand was starting to give way I did panic.
Then was "wow, that's cool, I just fell from being 'upstairs' and I'm fine" .
A couple of little mats that may or may not be placed in the right place is a bit more concerning - as less so for trad/sport climbing, though of course there's the case of a good fall. So far only done top rope indoors npt lead and that was a couple of years ago.0 -
I'm terrible at the climbs at the moment, but as I'm primarily doing it for the exercise I'm not bothered if I don't reach the top yet. It's all a step in the right direction and I'll reach the top eventually.
The falling is kinda cool though, and quite hilarious to watch other people doing it!0 -
As was pointed out to my by someone much better than me; it's fine to 'cheat'. If you can't make the route, then it's often worth adding in a couple of holds from another route etc. Once you've managed it like that, you can practice that a few times then maybe come back the next week and slowly do it just with the right colour.
Then follow on and even take some hold outs if it's easy! Said experienced climber (who must have been a good bit over 50 and had type 1 diabetes) later proceeded to climb up a slightly overhanging v0 with just his hands. (I can manage doing this hanging off the back side of a ladder, but even jugs on a climbing wall is a bit much for me.)
I will often just do a route in stages. So if it's a nasty start, I might give up on that and do other bits and come back to the start - or if I'm having trouble with something midway up but can do the start I'll jump/climb up using easy holds and keep practising just that until I have that section done, then link them together.
A couple of weeks ago at the depot I managed to do each individual bit of a route, but by then was too knackered to join them all together. When I went back on Monday I did the whole thing easily first time .
Was getting a bit frustrated with lack of progress last week, then next time I went noticed that I was gripping stuff I wouldn't have before.
It's definitely worth looking into the right technique - I find most climbing people are very friendly and helpful. I know I need to work on a lot of areas rather than just using brute strength (which I have enough of at the start of the evening at least ).0 -
I've got my eye on the finger boards and am looking forward to getting my upper body strength up enough to be able to practice on them.
The people at the climbing centre have been lovely. More than willing to offer advice on routes and technique to make getting up easier. I was nervous it would be a bit hardcore and full of people taking it all terribly seriously, but so far everyone has been really friendly and just enthusiastic about the sport. I think that's why I'm taking to it over an other exercise stuff I've tried before.0 -
I was looking at one of those 20 pull ups in 6 weeks programs, but then realised that it'll probably just hinder climbing trying to fit that in (circumstances have meant I've ended up bouldering every other day for the last week and a half pretty much, bar the last two where I went both times as I had friends with me on Monday and never got to work on the technique I wanted to so went yesterday.)
And on that, from talking to people, general advice seems to be that if you can, just spend the time climbing rather than worrying about a finger board.
Sure, if you either can't spend the time climbing or are good enough that your arms don't need the time to recover, I'm sure it makes good sense.
But right now I'm getting a fair bit of climbing in and am more limited by not wanting to over-exert my arms/tendons (I have weak wrists as it is, why I started it to try and strengthen them.)0 -
I'm not *technically* a rock climber - but I do embark on some pretty crazy hikes out in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Some definitely involve hoisting 30 lb packs (and yourself of course!) over huge boulders to get to the summit....does that count? :P0

I used to be a rock climber, before I wrecked my knee and my belayer moved 1000 miles away, lol! I did break an ankle once trying to get over an overhang one time, and then had the joy of hiking down and driving myself to the hospital. I loved climbing though, great times!0
