Yoga X and Breathing Question

OK. Yoga X is not my favorite workout of the P90X program, but I have to do it when I have it scheduled. I've noticed at times, I feel light headed and not sure why? I'm breathing in through my nose and out my mouth...duh, but not sure if I'm doing it right...LOL! Why would Yoga of all things make me feel light headed. Yes. I eat and drink water before and after the workout.
I'm only now burning 173 calories, I may have gotten that up above 200 calories a few times in the past. Not sure if this is a normal burn or not for Yoga X.
My resting heart rate is 57 and during my yoga, I'm getting up around 90-110 and more consistently 80's.
Thoughts?

Many of the Yoga poses used in Yoga X were not designed for people who have a substantial amount of weight to lose. If you have much of a gut it will lead to your torso fat pushing in on your diaphragm when bent into certain positions which impedes breathing. The program wasn't designed as a weight loss program. It was for people who are already fit to get even fitter. It can be modified for out of shape people or people who need to lose weight, but in the case of Yoga X it means writing off many poses entirely. It's common for people to substitute Stretch X in its place, or the Yoga DVD from Tony Horton's One on One series (only 45 minutes). Also the one from P90X2 is better.0

NO. I don't have much more to lose. I have about 20-30 lbs left. Currently 172 lbs and I don't view that as bad...just a little overweight when looking at BMI.0

As you exercise more your RHR and MaxHR begins to drop. This is good as your heart is growing stronger and when it does is pumps more blood and less often. While I don't recall having this same issue while doing Yoga X, I do recall having the exact same issue about a month into my 1st round of P90X except my lightheadedness came when I was getting up from a chair!!
Essentially what happens is your heart pumps and then if you make a sudden upward movement the blood hasn't pumped again which causes a lack of oxygen rich blood in your brain! This shift of blood inside your body is what causes the dizziness. This is completely normal as you gain more cardiovascular fitness.
That said if this is happening a lot more than in those types of situations, see your Doc as I am certainly not one of those.
The cure, at least for me, is more steady movement upward vs. doing it too quick. For example, in Warrior 1 raise your body and arms a tad slower. I now get up out of a chair in two movements instead of one giant motion.
Try that and see if it helps out any.0 -
Thank you. That makes so much more sense about what your saying. I'm not over concerned about it, was just wondering why. LOL!
So, its good not to be burning many calories doing the Yoga? Many say its good to do, but just wondered. I guess these are almost rest days for me or a moderate day of exercise. LOL!
Thanks again0 -
Yes, don't sweat the calories on Yoga X...you do sweat though!!! If you're early into it you will get better at the poses and frankly after the 1st month it actually be came my favorite. There are so many other benefits of giving your body the rest (repair) and the stretching is tremendous for keeping long, lean muscles. Given you're female I'm sure those are the kind you're after!!! :happy:0

Personally, the more I do Yoga X the more I fall in love with it. I have seen significant improvement in my strength, balance, and flexibility as a result of it. I also usually get an incredible calorie burn from it 500+ calories, and a lot of sweat which is awesome as it is all coming from a lower heart rate which means more fat being burned.
As for the breathing and lightheaded feeling... I can't really say but if it is happening frequently then it might be something you want to talk with your Doctor about. If you are breathing naturally, and not holding your breath then I wouldn't really expect that type of reaction. There may be something to the change in elevation of your head but that also sound circulatory which might warrant at least a question to your Doc.0 -
It might be a good idea to check your iron levels - I was getting light headed a few years ago and it turned out I was anaemic. I hadn't considered it because I thought anaemic people were always skinny, lol.0

I haven't done PX90, but I would try just breathing through your nose. Almost all yoga classes encourage you to breathe solely through your nose.0
