Out of curiousity I usually go over for my protein... I'm assuming because I love gorbonzo beans? Lol. But besides that I see people taking protein shakes and powder all the time.. Is this because they dnt get enough protein? What do these powders provide? Before I go overloading on protein lol. Also I diet and excercise. But I want opinions of people who feel dieting helped them more / people who excercised. I do both. I've seen that sometimes people lose massive amounts of weight just sticking to one of these options. any thoughts? - thank you ❤❤❤

protein helps you build muscle. working your muscles helps you burn fat. i try to get 150-180g protein/day. i use shakes because i cant eat that much but, depending on your goals, you may be able to get enough protein by just making smart food choices. i get about 25% of my protein from powder. add me if you want, i keep my diary open

I have my protein shakes after my hard workouts....on other days I skip the protein powder in my shakes to save calories...

I'm trying for about 150g a day also. I'm getting close but most days I need the shakes to help hit it. MFP macros are way too low ;)

MFP has it's protien goals far too low. Exceeding the default is good. :)

I just started using protein shakes today! I usually never get close to my daily protein level and wanted to start strength training so I opted for the shakes. As for diet vs. exercise, I dunno. I do both.

If you're using standard MFP protein ratio, as above, it's pretty low.

I go for around 170g of protein a day.
Protein shake is an easy, cheap and convenient way to do it that I find quite tasty.
Love to do it eating nice good quality meat, but that's considerably more expensive.

It is all about calories but I happen to like protein and it makes me feel better. I eat less than MFP tells me and exercise a lot. I eat about half the carbs MFP tells me and I'm on or over on the protein.

You need weight training to build or keep lean body mass.

Eating less is what makes you lose fat. forget exercise for this, but losing fat without exercise is just play gross.

Cardio is good for health benefits, of course you burn but you can ignore it unless you are lean. When you are lean that is when you have to worry about starvation mode or losing lean body mass.

In everything listen to your body, it tells you what is healthy, be wary of others telling you to eat more or less except your doctor.

You got it right as you are. Eat food, drink water, exercise. Simple. Don't need to waste money on shakes.

Also a saying that pops its head up around here a fair bit.

If you want to look good, watch what you eat. If you want to look good naked, watch what you eat and train.

So should I just wait until I've lost the amount of fat I want to lose and then consider protein powder/shakes and things when I hit the gym???

I also think MFP sets the protein goals too low. I use supplement shakes because I aim for a high protein count and have diffculty most days eating enough to get to my goal. Some people like them, some dont. If you can get enough protein from food then I dont think they necessary. Sometimes, honestly I am just not hungry really and would rather drink my protein. Whatever gets you to goal

It depends what your goals are.. I add protein shakes because I want to build muscle. Its a fast and easy way to get some extra protein in! But you could also get it from chicken, fish, eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese etc.

Using protein shakes have made all the difference. I've lost weight before, and since I have really been working on my diet and keeping my protein high, I am retaining far more muscle. There are times when I can't eat another chicken breast or any more tuna, so a shake is the best alternative for me. I think someone else in the thread said this, but there are times when it's easier to drink the protein.

Yes right now I haven't hit the gym yet.. I just didn't wanna be missing out on something major lol. I'm new to this and my weight loss is going well with diet and excercise.. I was a soda junkie cutting soda out alone after calculating everything left me at 800/1000 calories a day.. If I try to eat more I feel like I'm defeating the purpose of teaching myself eat when your hungry stop when your full. I'm fairly small and petite I'm 5'0 nothing and for the first time became ver weight ... People on MFP often ripp me to pieces for not hitting 1200 but I'm not gonna add in a cup of soda just to reach my goal?? . At 150 when I started I was borderline obese now at 135 I'm "overweight" I dnt hit an average/ borderline healthy weight until 125. My goal is 110/115 & then I plan to hit the gym.. This is why I was wondering about the protein lol

I use them.. I am not a big meat eater it's one reason I take them , the other reason is I use Maxine's burn I find it helps me eat less and stay fuller for longer so I dont snack.. and gives me abit more energy.. i'm up at 6am and in bed by 11:30pm at night.. I also take Body Effects just before my work out.. I find all these lil things help :) but its up the individual person.. I found before when i wasnt taking these i was hungry alot more and snacking more and wasnt seeing results as quickly as i would like to have

Protien helps repair your muscles after a workout, and makes them stronger. Without them I feel really sluggish for the rest of the day after a workout. I wouldn't use it as a meal replacement, but maybe something to hold you over until you can eat if you are hungry.

Extra protein is great when you're trying to build muscle. It also helps speed recovery times by repairing shredded muscles faster. I rarely hit my protein goal, I really should use shakes or eat more beans and greek yogurt (I'm vegetarian).
