Why, Carly, why?

Dropped Jake off at school and absentmindedly drove the rest of the way to work with his local pop station on the radio. At my office, I parked on the very highest floor and the very furthest part of the parking lot so that I could get a few hundred extra steps in. I guess I was using my usual power walking gait headed toward the garage elevators. And of course, when I'm at the park doing that with my iPod on, I sometimes sing along with the music. Anyway, the last song on the radio before I got to the office was "Call Me Maybe." Now, I'm not a real big pop music fan, but it's got a catchy beat and cute lyrics. Which is all fine and good until you get into the garage elevator with three guys and blurt out "Hey, I just met you... and this is crazy..." As they turned to me, the look on all three of their faces ranged from alarm to panic. I immediately stopped singing mid sentence and said, "I guess I really did sing that out loud." They burst out laughing. Well, at least they have a good story to tell.

Love it - and yep - have done it myself many a time - I'm usually the person you see driving down the highway signing top volume (badly I might add!) but always having fun!

Could be worse... You could've been singing this bit: Hot night, wind was blowin'
Where you think you're going, baby?

Oh boy. If you think your Americans have it bad with that song, we have heard it a million times more in Canada. There is a rule with the Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) that we have to hear a certain percentage of Canadian content. I think it's something like 40%. Well, there are only SO many different GOOD Canadian artists. Additionally, we are insanely proud of any Canadian that makes it popular in the US. If a song is played too many times on your radio, you can bet it's played 40% MORE times on mine.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_content

This is the reason many Canadians cannot stand the following artists: (in no particular order but my own)

    Nickelback
    Celine Dion
    Justin Beiber
    Avril Lavigne
    Call Me Maybe

Carly Rae herself is still okay, but we have already moved on to her next single, Curiosity. Where the lyrics sound to me like a prostitute that has fallen in love with a John. And I'm already tired of listening to it.

Which is too bad, because like a total nerd, I really did like her since her first album. The girl was on a season of Canadian Idol (canceled) and I voted for her to win. Of course she didn't, but I still bought her catchy little album.

Not sure where I was going with this. Except, yes, that song is WAY TOO MUCH.

Too funny! I had no idea about the CRTC thing. That explains sooo much about the radio play during my big Nova Scotia road trip last month!
