This is a new area for me, and I'd like to start out on the right path. So my question is: would it be better to use lighter weights and do more reps, or heavier weights with less reps? Or does it even matter?

Always lift as heavy as you can with good form. 8-12 reps is a good place to start.0

What works best for me are classes like bodypump - you get to do exactly the right balance between light/heavy speed and so forth - and all that on music and in a group so it's very motivating.
If you can't make it to such a class then you can probably find videos online which are free/not too expensive, and which require minimal material (typically just elastic bands and small dumbbells.0
