Counting Calories vs Counting Macros?

Which one do you do more of?

My two biggest concerns are calories and protein. As long as I'm hitting my calorie goal (to facilitate fat loss) and protein macro (to preserve as much lean body mass as possible), the rest pretty much fall into place.

I pay attention to both. I make sure I'm under calories, but I also check and make sure my macro's are on-point where I want them. And if I go over or way under on calories I pay attention to macro's.
  • I watch my calories and my fat. I had a heart attack, so that's kind of a necessity.

    Agree 100%

I don't pay too much attention to macros...it seems like as long as I'm under my calorie goal and I have had a pretty good eating day, they fall into place. I'm at 40/30/30 carbs/protein/fat, so it doesn't seem to be too difficult.
  • Depends on what your goal is really.

I'd say cutting you need to eat to your calorie limit and never go over it. Pay a lot of attention to keeping the Protein maxed as others have said its important for keeping lean mass.

Maintenance (i'm currently on) I try to make sure that i fill all the macros without going over my calorie limit. For example if i eat a high carb lunch i make sure that my dinner is high protien/fat, eg Steak and Salad for dinner if I have pasta for lunch. But again never go over your calorie limit, but i'm not too concerned if one day i'm lacking in a particular macro as long as its not every day. I find once you start looking at the macros in your meals you realize what you can't eat for lunch and dinner together on the one day (eg pasta twice in a day).

Bulking who cares lol eat like a king.. No really, I guess (have not bulked yet) pay attention to maxing protein as that's the point in the end of the day even if you go over calorie limit.
