So, I went to the museum and the mall today. I spent about 4 hours walking very slow. I do want to put those calories burned into my diary, so to be sure I don't over-estimate, I just put 2 hours walking; I mean in a museum your stopping and going and what not. Anyways, it came up to like 447 calories burned. Doesn't that sound like alot just for walking around a museum?

Sounds about right... try wearing a podometer next time; works great to get a more accurate number of calories you are buring. Everyone is a little different... but for me 2- 2 1/2 hours of walking is about 450 calories burned0

At 5ft 1.8 and 153lbs, I burn approximately 100 calories a mile. Or, did last time I walked with my HRM. I can walk three miles an hour, for around 300 calories, but I do get my heart rate up when I walk. I guess conceivably you could have covered four miles in a museum in two hours? Depends how long you spent looking around, and whether or not you covered extra distance if your heart rate didn't go up.0 -
Running at a pace of around 4.5-5 mph burns about 100 calories per mile. Walking is less than this but many people count it as 100 calores per mile anyway, therefore believing that walking at 2 mph (a brisk pace) would burn 200 calores per hour or maybe even more. A study cited in the article bellow shows the average number of calories burned for women walking and running for a mile as 74 and 105, respectively.
I think that a lot of online calorie counters overestimate the number of calories burned during exercise and/or are inconsistent. It might be beneficial to double check the one you're using and how many calories per mile it is showing. As per the walking around the mall question, I would think about how much of your time was spent walking continuously and multiply by 74.
For reference, here is a good article that explains why running and walking do not burn the same number of calores per mile:

edit: or maybe multiply only by 43 based on how you would like to interpret the net calories argument he includes.0 -
I think that's way to high, unless your walking at a fast pass. I'd think it would be more like 100- 200 cals at the most burnt0

I use a pedometer app on my phone, called Noom walk, and on a day like yesterday it says I walked about for nearly 5 miles and burned 462 cals, which is nearly 12000 steps.. I logged it on MFP as 135 mins and 450 cals as some of the 'steps' were actually vibrations from the bus. I am 178 lb and 5"4' for reference.
I think your approximation should be close to what it actually was.0
