Broken Ankle

My primary exercise has been walking or hiking. Two days ago I broke my ankle in two places. I have to stay off of it for at least two months. Anyone have any ideas for aerobic exercise that I can do without putting weight on my ankle?

Maybe upper body kickboxing moves are an option. You could do those whilst seated and still get your heart rate right up.
In one of the Jillian Michaels DVDs (possibly 30DS), she has a cardio segment that is just boxing. It's done whilst in a squat, but I don't see why you couldn't just sit to do it.
YouTube is bound to have some videos that you could take moves from.

So sorry you're injured. Can you get to a deep pool? I broke my foot and have discovered aqua jogging. You use a flotation belt around your waist and "jog" in the deep end of the pool. Completely non weight bearing. Of course, it's not nearly as enjoyable as jogging and hiking but it gets it done! I've added some upper body with just dumbells at home. Best wishes for good healing!
  • I broke my ankle three weeks ago mate. Cardio is extremely tough to do with a broken ankle BUT once your able to be on your crutches for extended periods, just walking on them will provide a reasonable cardio workout.

It loads your shoulders with up to 170% of your body weight and you consume 50% more oxygen too. I can get you the links to this if you want them.

I'm still managing to get a good cardio workout by using PHA (peripheral heart action), using your upper body immediately followed by a lower body exercise.

Yes please send me the link for cardio with crutches. I am in too much pain right now to use the crutches much, but as the pain subsides, I think that the crutches will be my cardio.

Good luck with the healing. :flowerforyou:

I found in the exercise data base, walking using crutches that give 107 calories for 15 minutes. I am about exhausted after 10. It must be more exercise than the data base indicates
