I think most of us are more comfortable in our skin now, than we were being an overweight child. Of course no one wants to be overweight, but why do we feel less socially isolated as adults than we did as kids when we are still overweight? What changes in our life make us realize that the things we cared about in school really weren't as important as we thought?

Not true for me. I became a recluse in my own home for going on 20 years. I loathed myself for being fat. I still do. After all of these years i finally decided i want to know what its like to love myself. I dont think people become more comfortable. I think they just get used to it, and when adult life and responsibilities happen, it just kind of gets moved to the back burner.0
