Greetings.

I'm new to this site (even though I've been seeing it around a couple of times while looking up stuff about weight loss and such). I've finally decided to join after reading a bunch of success stories and seeing how members actually support each other here - therefore, giving motivation to each other.

I'm eighteen years old and I'm 330lb's (or at least, I think I am. I don't have any scales here and the last time I checked my weight, I was 110 kgs). I'm unfortunately unhealthy and quite overweight for my age and height (5'6). And, I'm trying to change my lifestyle and hopefully succeed. I've been trying to lose weight the past month, but I've been unsuccessful. Trying to adjust to a new eating style and trying to be fit isn't easy, so I'm hoping I can get some motivation from others here.

I'm not active. I do walk.. around the house. Sometimes, but most of the time I'm sitting in front of the computer or sleeping the stress away. From 6 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon, I'm usually on my desk, working on my portfolio and doing some other things (career-related, I play games for a living, lol, etc). 2PM+, I'm either still on the computer or sleeping.

For the past month, I've been trying to change my eating patterns. More protein, less carbs or no carbs at all. More water, no soda's (I was an addict for Soda's). I've also been trying to exercise, 30 minutes a day though of some fat burning cardio dancing (Hip Hop Abs) and then sometimes hop onto a vibrating machine since apparently it works, a bit.

But at the end of the day, I don't feel like I've done enough. Then when I get sick or am on my monthly cramps, I just stop and become a couch potato again. I'm terribly sick of it. Wow, I've typed a lot.

Basically, I'm 18. I'm overweight and I want to change my life. I have a question though, what kind of exercise do you guys think I should do? I've already planned some out. I know that changing my eating style is 80% of what's needed to lose weight, I'm fine with that but exercise-wise, I'm at a lost.

All help appreciated. Thank you! (Sorry for typing a lot!)

Welcome to MyFitnessPal! There is a lot of support and encouragement and advise out there. I was the same way when I started, what exercise should I do. My main exercise right now is walking. I'm doing it every day. It's a good way for me to get moving, work my muscles and feel like I am getting some place.

You will need carbs, just make them good carbs like vegetables and complex carbs. Stay away from the prepackaged stuff and that helps a lot. I choose things like real potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, turnips. brown rice. I have an occasional whole wheat bread item in the 100 calorie range (Sandwich Thins, Mini Bagel)

I also occasionally, (once a week or so) have one food item I really enjoy but know I shouldn't eat. and I measure it carefully! For instance, yesterday I really really wanted nachos. so I counted out my 9 tortilla chips, sprinkled with cheddar cheese (1/4 cup of 2% cheddar) and zapped it in the microwave for 40 seconds, added in some salsa and I had a nachos fix for under 250 calories!

You can do this. One day at a time, one choice at a time.

Welcome! My advice would be to get out of the house. Especially if you work from home. If I stay inside all day, I feel depressed by the evening, and like I haven't achieved anything. And if I feel like a couch potato, I'm more likely to go eat something out of boredom, or to make myself feel better. How about thinking up a circuit route around your neighbourhood (parks or somewhere pleasant if possible!) and starting out with a 30 minute walk, then increasing speed, length or time as you feel up to it? You could post how many minutes or how far you went each day, and perhaps feel motivated as you watch it increase over time...

    Hi!

I'm fairly new here too and have found the people so friendly and helpful. I hate exercising and it's nice when someone comments on your status updates saying well done etc. Really encourages you.

Portion control for my evening meal has been a biggy for me as I love cooking!
Also, it helps to put aside one naughty day to treat yourself and stop those cravings.

I have bad asthma so my exercise regime is progressing quite slowly. I love walking and have just started short bursts of jogging - 10 minutes at a time. I also have an exercise bike which I hate but make myself do every now and then for variety. I have a couple of exercise dvds at home - they're good because you can do 5, 10, 15, 30 or 1 hour sessions. I also have games like just dance. I think variety is the key.

Feel free to add me
  • Hello and welcome to the site, I found this site by accident. My major problem is I always kinda lied to myself on how much I have really eaten, by filling in my food diary and being honest with myself it really shows how easily it is to add an extra couple of hundred of calories. some of the veg I guess the weight but when I stop loosing any weight I will get more precise. Drinking water is also a great help and very important. I'm taking 1 week at a time and then Im not putting myself under big pressure. 1-2 ibs a week would be great after the initial first couple of weeks where you usually loose more. If you start off with walks and build up the pace and add other excercise when you get into it. Its not going to happen in a month or 2. I dont know if thats any help but I hope you stick with it. Nothing like how good even a couple of lbs less feels
