Losing inches but not weight? Do I need a nutritionist?

Argh! I have been working out regularly since July 28th and I have only lost 1 lb - but I have lost about 2 - 2.5 inches all over. This is confusing me! Why? Is it being over 40? I eat healthy, cut out bread and sugar practically completely, workout 5 days a week, and drink enough water. I;m thinking of hiring a nutritionist to help me, or is this normal? I haven't tried to lose weight before - it just crept up on on me over the years and now I want it GONE! Advice? and thanks!

You should track your diet AND exercise for three weeks to a month. Stick to a calorie goal, try to eat as clean as possible, follow a work out schedule. Then see if you still have problems. My guess is that with merely "trying" to "eat healthy" you are probably not eating the right foods or eating low enough calories to see a weight loss. It's basic math, really.

As you are working out 5 days a week and mesurements are shrinking I guess that fat weight has been replaced by muscle bulk
  • You are doing GREAT!!! Since you are getting regular exercise and losing dimensions at the same time, the reason that you are not losing weight is probably because you are putting on muscle weight. That's a good thing! Try to be strict with your diary. It will keep you on track. No sugar is excellent! It's the heroin of foods. Low carbs are good for weight loss but your body needs some whole grains for the fiber and nutrients. Fill up on water (not too much, it dilutes the nutrients that you absorb) and fruit and roasted veggies (20 min in the oven) and try to cut out ALL REFINED FOODS. Cook from scratch on the weekends and parcel it out during the week. You are on the right track!!
  • Muscle mass weighs more than fat does! If you're working out regularly and still losing inches, you're obviously getting results - you're just replacing your fat with muscle and that's why the number on the scale isn't changing. :)

I suggest paying less attention to the scale and focusing more on looking and feeling better!

I know exactly how you feel! I have been the same weight for the past two weeks and it is frustrating me because I am eating right. Or so I would like to think. But I work out six times a week.My clothes feel a little looser and I am sure I have lost inches I just have not gotten to measure myself yet because I do it once a month. But I am so frustrated because I thought by working out and eating right I would loose the weight but Here I am stuck at this weight. I said I wasnt going to go on the scale anymore because it gets very discouraging but I gave in after two weeks and bam still the same weight. Just keep going loosing inches is exactly what you need that means you are getting muscle!

If you have lost inches you have lost fat.
  • thanks for the replies and encouragement! My sister thinks I am not eating enough - I guess I should keep a food diary but it's sooooo tedious lol. I'll do it though - maybe commit for a month and see how it goes. I DO feel much better and love my clothes getting loose on me - maybe ignoring the number is a good idea!

    Thanks again!!

I am having the same "problem" if you can call it that :)

I have noticed tho I will stick to a certain number for a couple weeks/month then drop 1-5 Lbs. Its what I have dub the bobbing effect :/ I know I am losing inches because I measure myself/clothes are starting to fall off etc. I stopped using the scale as a way to measure my progress about 2 months ago because I weight the same but lost 7 inches?!

    BINGO!

I am much happier losing inches than weight. Who cares what you weigh? It's just a number. How you look and feel is so much more important. Throw the scale in the closet and forget it until it's been at least 3 months.
