So the only way to get 2 oz is pretty mucch to use a scale.. using measuring cups won't help b/c all foods have a different weight. Sorry

Well- 2oz of what is the key. I can give estimates if you know which food you are asking about...

well theysay that 3 oz is about the size of the palm of your hand, so I think 2 oz would be a lil less than that.... and if you have any 1oz shot glasses, that's how I would do it for liquid. Just think shots!

the issue with the palm of hand method is I have some teeny hands, I'm 5 feet nothing.. I don't think that would work for a lot of people

I heard that 4 oz of meat was about the size of a deck of cards, that's what my mom says she learned from weight watchers, somebody tell me if I'm wrong.

what I want to know is do you weight before or after it's cooked??
  • It was spaghetti. I am going to get a scale hopefully tomorrow. Thanks for all the help.

I always use 1/4 cup to measure 2 oz

I completely agree. 2 ounces is 2 ounces in weight, but a steak the size of your palm may weigh 5 ounces and a piece of lettuce the size of your palm may weigh 2 ounces. Hard to base weight on size.

For meat you should weigh it after it is cooked. For pasta you should weigh it before it is cooked as the weigh changes when you cook it. I make mine separate from everyone else. But I think after you do this after a while you will figure out how much 2 oz of pasta cooked is.

With the spaghetti we currently use, I've discovered that 2 oz uncooked comes out to approximately 3/4 cup cooked. What I usually do it weigh the spaghetti on my scale in multiples of 2. After it's cooked, I measure out how much is there in cups. Divide that by the number of servings I did to come up with how much a cooked serving is. I'm keeping track of the average, but so far it comes out to .74 cups. Close enough to 3/4 for me!
  • Here is a great webpage that gives a chart explaining what to compare your sizes to. Its like a visual that helps me with portion control when I am away form my food scale.
Scroll to bottom of document for chart:

    http://www.commonhealth.virginia.gov/documents/PortionControlFactSheet.pdf

    1 baked potato = fist
1 ounce of chips or pretzels = 2 handfuls
1 ounce of nuts = thumb
1serving of fat (margarine) = thumb 3 ounces of meat (one serving) = palm
    1 serving of vegetable = 1 handful

2 Tbsp peanut butter = ping pong ball
3 ounces of cooked meat = deck of cards 1 piece of cornbread = bar of soap
1 serving of bread = one slice
½ cup cooked broccoli = scoop of ice cream
1½ ounces of cheese = 3 dominoes Medium piece of fruit = baseball
    1 ounce of cheese = 4 dice
    ½ bagel = hockey puck
