I don't. When I do cardio, I need to make the most of my time calorie-burning, so after a 5-minute warmup at normal resistance I set the resistance on an elliptical to "running in treacle" and run like I'm being chased by rabid weasel zombies with chainsaws, ramp myself up to the top of the "cardio training" zone, and maintain that heart rate for the duration of my workout, followed by a 5-minute cooldown, a quick stretch, and a snack.

you don't need to keep it at that level.

I don't pay attention to it anymore. Work as hard as you can. The whole "fat-burning-zone" is a technicality. You are burning fat at higher rates, too.

You can google fat-burning zone to get tools that will figure the number for you. I say ignore it and work as hard as you can all the time. You are trying to build a healthy body.

I had my RMR tested by a professional and my metabolism is all messed up. Apparently, my body does not like to burn fat and therefore is ineffecient. She told me to try to do at least three workouts a week between 120-140 (for me) for 60+ minutes. She said that this is the best way to burn fat and train my body to burn fat over carbs. I am training for a half marathon, so she said those days in the higher HR zones are okay, but the LSD (long slow days) are best for my body right now. The results and folder full of info she gave me were really interesting and helpful. I'd recommend looking into this testing if its available near you. It was done at my local hospital for $60 and totally worth it.

I've been on a plateau all summer and busted through it in the last 3 weeks changing up my habits with her guidance.

fat burning zone is a myth. your goal of every workout should be to improve intensity on your previous workout.

thanks for your responses guys..I have been doing interval training..burning 400 to 500 calories in a session...I will stick to doing that for a bit then..and then trying to up my calories burnt in one session.
  • Fat burning zone referes to the Percentage of fat being burned ex: %65 or whatever your body allows. The problem is that perticular zone is very difficult to stay within its kinda like a very slow jog or fast walk on incline. I've noticed if you do intervals with progreeingly increasing the incline say from 1% to 10% and do one minute run/walk intervals when your done your heartrate stay high for up to an hour or so afterwards. Its a little more effort but less time and I think more effective.
