Hi
I'm just starting a long journey into getting my weight down. I had been looking into have bariatric surgery for a while and was referred by my doctor a couple of years ago. I finally got my date through this summer and cut a long story short I have cancelled! I want to give it one more chance on my own, I don't like the idea of what the op does to your body initially and long term. So here I go with 130 lbs to lose.
I think I have got the eating on track, and am finding the MFP app wonderful! I am however struggling with getting active, well I am doing quite well compared to how I was, but I am always beating myself up about what I'm not doing! I have depression right now which doesn't help matters!
Apart from trying to lose weight I'm also an artist doing an MA at Plymouth and have three daughters.
If anyone wants to add me as a friend and we can offer mutual support that would be great. Also anyone live near by also trying to lose a lot of weight then get in touch

Getting lonely on here0 -
Hi :-)
I have sent you a friend request, I'm not local but I am at least in the UK...in the North East, I get down on myself too, I think it is a common thing with the whole depression and need to lose weight thing...I have only just joined, day 3, and think it would be so much better if met some supportive friends along the way, I have a lot to lose...35kg...not sure what it is in pounds, have chosen kgs because the number seems so much less lol
I am 44, got two teenage autistic boys and am an artist working from home...being at home all the time makes it difficult to excercise unless I run up and down stairs...probably break my neck doing that!
anyhow I am here and happy to chat...anyone else reafing this please add me too... weight loss is a lonely journey on your own :-/
p.s I promise to be supportive too :-D:flowerforyou:0 -
Hi
I'm new to MFP too ........ currently living in Southern Italy but my sister lives in Tavistock so I do get your way sometimes.
Well done for cancelling the surgery .... brave of you.... I hope MFP can help you lose the weight yourself. I find just keeping the diary really focuses the mind on what is going down throat.
Another thing I have found really helpful is the Beck Diet Solution Book ..... it's not a diet plan, more about using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to change your attitudes / habits. It seems to be working for me ....
Am about to send you a friend request.
Ciao, Debbie0 -
This may sound funny, but I totally stopped reading your post at the part where you said you cancelled your appointment! That is just awesome that you are going to try to do this on your own one more time. I personally feel that taking this process slowly and methodically will produce better long term results than the surgery ever could! Congratulations to you and Good luck! If you have the guts to cancel that appointment I don't see how you can't have the drive to do this on your own! You can add me if you'd like!0

Hi Haribobabe, thanks for the add and reply,
I know what you mean about being at home all the time, Wii fitness games are really doing it for me right now, do you have a Wii?
Thanks mbcarreno08 and LivingInPugli, sometimes I think I'm mad for cancelling and some might say I am. But it just wasn't right for me, I think alongside being self destructive with food, giving in and opting for the operation was also a form of punishment I think now. I seem to be stuck at a certain weight right now, up and down a couple of pounds each week. But losing inches and feeling better so I know it's all working well.
I also found as I did nearly three weeks of consuming just 4 pints of milk a day in preparation for the op showed me some will power I never thought I had. Doing this also seemed to reset a switch in me, I learned a lot about listening to my body and understanding hunger signs, thirst etc. Also it gave my stomach a good chance to shrink.
So here goes, hope we can all support each other on the way, go us!

I'm not local at all-I'm across the pond you might say. I live in Virginia, but I am so excited for you for cancelling that surgery! I have a close cousin that has had it done twice...and she'll even admit that it might fix the weight, but for her, it didn't fix the underlying issues that caused the weight.
I've been here on MFP for about 4 months. I'm still trying to figure out what works best for me, especially because I'm on the downward slope heading towards my ultimate goal weight. I can say that tracking measurements has helped me tremendously! Even on the weeks that I seem to be stuck at a particular number on the scale, those measurements show the work. I have a ridiculous spreadsheet that I use to track all my numbers, and have it figured to calculate my body fat %-personally (and i am by no means any type of authority) that gives me the best indication of my results.
And I LOVE my Wii! On the mornings I'm too lazy to go 3 minutes across the street to the gym, I'll get up and play on my Wii. Usually it's Just Dance (or one of it's sequels) or Zumba (just got Zumba 2...HOLY COW!). Dancing like a goofball in my living room doesn't feel so much like "work," whereas running on the treadmill can seem a little daunting some days.
I'm getting ready to send you a friend request. I'd be delighted to help encourage you along the way...I know it has done WONDERS for my self esteem!
Best of luck to you!0 -

Hi Bex,
It's great that you have decided against surgery. I am sure you are in the right place to lose the weight you need without getting chopped open.
The support on MFP will be a massive bonus to you and the forums are a fantastic resource.
I wish you well and with a bit of dedication you WILL lose weight.

Hi Bex, I'm just up the road in Torquay. Well done on cancelling your surgery, you can definitely do this. I started my journey with 130 lb to lose and I'm 48lb in. It's not easy and I keep falling off the wagon, so live for the small victories, congratulate yourself regularly and use your supporters here to help push you on.0

Wow, go you for cancelling the op!
Ive found music is the key to my workouts. Or having a good natter. At the gym I will either listen to 'angry' music if I have had a particularly stressful day which also de stresses me and makes me work out like mad. Or I listen to upbeat music to get me going.
Another 'workout' that doesnt feel like a work out is walking, grab a friend/family member and before you know it you would have walked an hour away!
My mum suffers from depression and I can tell the difference in her when she has exercised and when she has slacked off for a few days, push past it and you will feel much better after a work out!
I shall add you, since Im pretty friendless on here and we all need the motivation and support!0 -
Well done for cancelling your appointment! It sounds like you're determined to get healthy, and you can definitely do it without that dangerous surgery. At one point, I was considering weight loss surgery too, and I'm so thankful that I couldn't get the funding together. I wasn't in the right frame of mind to lose weight then, and after learning more, I'm not a big fan of it anyway. I live in Devon... Feel free to add me if you like. I don't have any specific weight loss goal (except the old, "to fit back into my wedding dress" chestnut), but I'm about 82 lbs down now.0

Woo hoo, again thanks, the responses are going very well and getting lots of friends. I thought MFP app was great, then I find these forums online, didn;t think it could get any better.
Support is so vital, was considering joining a slimming club just for this type of support, thanks you lot0
