I just looked at your diary out of curiosity. I wouldn't worry about tasting food when preparing it. I do the same thing. Its not enough to worry about.
  • If I'm being honest, no I don't. There's a jar of gummy things on a co-workers desk at all times that I count as my 'freebies' during the day. Yes I know it's technically cheating and if the candy of the day happens to be some sort of chocolate thing then I will count that since they're higher in fat and calories but for a couple of gummy worms, I'm not too worried. I figure I burn those off in the walking around the office during the day.

Yes definitely if it is a high calorie item. If I'm cooking and tasting and noticing that I am having a lot of "spoonfuls" then I usually quick add calories into my food diary.

Absolutely. I do. These calories can add up QUICKLY. For example, say you are 44-years-old, 5'4" tall, and weigh 157 pounds. You "forget" and put mayonnaise on your hamburger. That is 100 calories. It would take you 25 minutes of walking at 3 mph to work off the little bit of mayonnaise. Maybe a few fries left over from the kids? More calories, more walking. A couple spoons of mashed potatoes? More calories, more walking. One could easily add 500 extra calories a day by "tasting" a little bit of this and a little bit of that while cooking.

It is your weight loss journey and the choice is yours. :)

    This!

    Nope, I don't count it.

I figured me just walking around doing house hold things, grocery shopping, whatever burns off that bite or two since it wouldn't be more then 100 cals for one bite or something.
  • YUP~it's a must...as I have seen written..."calories are calories!" If it enters your body it MUST enter your diary.

Yes! If it touches my lips, it goes in my food diary. Even if it's a really miniscule amount. Those pesky calories add up quickly.

It depends on how you're measuring your other foods and meals. If you're weighing or using measuring cups for meals, then you should account for every bite. However, if you estimate your meals by sight or if you eat out, your total is already inaccurate anyway, so one bite is the lesser problem.

Either way, stay at or under your goal. If you lose weight, great. If you don't lose weight, you know what to do.

We all have opinions and here is mine: if you're not frantic about needing to lose asap, then who cares. YES calories are calories, I document gum if I have more than a piece in a day sometimes lol, but when I cook if i know my day will end with me having a few hundred defecit then I taste, as long as it ends with a taste or two, and It's not a buffet lol ha ha but seriously if you want results quick count every drop u put in otherwise relax! As long as ur not at ur daily limit for cals as well.

It depends on how big of a bite and how calorific it is. If it happens while cooking, just factor it into your serving size when adding your meal to your diary. Bites here and there are not a big deal for people that are maintaining their weight, but has a bigger impact on people that are trying to lose.
  • Dpends on what it is that you are taking a bite of. Also depends on how many bites we are taking about.
I will definitely add bites of anything that contains significant fat as fat contains twice as many calroes as carbs or protein.

During the first few days of my MFB food diary, it as a shocking revealation to me that my snack calories were more than the breakfast, lunch and dinner calories combined!

Look, if it's only a bite or a taste, and folks are logging it, are they also the ones that log ' moderate cleaning' as an exercise?? If you're going to log a taste or a small bite then add calories burnt walking from room to room, up and down stairs, too. This is a lifestyle, not a jail term!!!!

OP- since you are eating so far under your calorie goal (according to the last 2 days where you only ate around 800), it won't matter.

This^ I noticed this too. Why are you eating so few calories? One day you ate less than 600 and the other less than 800!?!?

ETA: To answer your question though, like one of the other posters said if it is something high in calories but is only a small amount like avocado or peanut butter yes I do count it. If it is like vegetables or something low cal no, 1 or 2 calories or even 5 is not going to really effect my weight loss.
  • Click >Quick Tools>Quick Add Calories and add a few calories depending on what you ate. I wouldn't go through the trouble of trying to add .025 servings of this and .0125 servings of that to make up the one or two bites of mashed potatos..

Rarely. I don't count all my physical activity in my calorie goal. In fact my calorie goal is below my BMR. So I actually have some breathing room to not count these and still lose weight. However, I do try to limit taking samples of multiple items daily. I only do this if I go to a buffet and that is intentional to keep the calories down, but I count each spoon then.

Not always. If my wife wants me to taste something or I have a little nibble here or there, I may not log it. If I have more than just a taste, I log it. Some say that "calories are calories" and that you can sabotage your weight loss (and that is very true), but I have managed to average 2-3 lbs per week for the last 6 weeks, even with a few nibbles, while having my target set to 1.5 lbs/week. In general, I would say log everything, but a little taste here and there is not going to ruin your success.
