Organizing a Walk/Run

Has anyone ever helped set up a walk or run for a cause? I have an opportunity to do something like this and I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips or words of wisdom about getting something like this going. Mainly looking for tips on organizing one, things that are important to set up, organization needs...ect? Thanks!

Find a registration site & set up deep discounts for early registration - and make the on-site registration twice what the online registration is. It's so much easier if you know how many participants you are going to have early enough to make decisions on things like porta-potties, prizes, goody bag stuffers, T-shirts, etc.

Make sure you will have enough volunteers.

Will it be timed? Timing companies often have online bulletin boards of upcoming races. Stop by running clubs. Your local running stores will have a place to post flyers and often are willing to give out discount coupons for the goody bags and maybe even prizes.

We did a $100 gift certificate to a restaurant in town that we only paid the restaurant $50 for. Ask around.

Make sure the course is right for the audience. In the one we did, the course was just right for the runners, but too long for walkers, we should have had two courses.

Go to other races and see who's sponsoring and ask them what their sponsorship policy is.

Start EARLY!! We only had 4 months to plan and it wasn't enough, although it turned out OK in the end.

Thank you so much! We are just in the beginning stages so I may be messaging you :) Our plan is for the run to be this spring, so a good 6-7 months away but still seems like it could come up fast!
