Motivated as Ever!

I'm new to myfitness pal.. and I just want to say I love it! I was using Weight Watchers.. it worked, but it was such a pain to always stop and figure out points.. this is just too easy
I have 20lbs to lose, and am hoping to do it by Christmas.. my question to everyone is.. why does MFP say that I can only lose 0.9lbs per week safely? I was hoping for at least 1-2lbs/week.. Are they just basing this on an average?
Thanks everyone for your input. and it is a pleasure to have all of you in my corner! I hope we can all be a motivation to each other!

Hi! I too started MFP today. I have actually had the account for a while when I got my iPhone, but am seriously starting to use it today. I need the accountability and my best friend is going to help.

I want to lose 90 lbs. Really, I just want to be healthy. I want to be the best shape that I have ever been by the time I am 40, which is in a year and a half. I want this to be a lifestyle change. I have lost weight in the past, using things like Weight Watchers and other diets, but I gain it back. :( Never again.

I wish you the best on your new MFP journey and hope I can we encouraged by others and also encourage others to be the best they can be. :)

MFP doesn't include exercise. MFP encourages you to eat your exercise calories back. Bottom line- If you only have 20lb's to lose, it's tough to calorie restrict enough to lose more than a pound/week. However, if you exercise and don't eat your calories back, you'll do better. Hope this helps.

BTW... If you did well on weight watchers, you will do so much better here. Welcome ;-)
  • OMG.. hitting 40 was awful for me and my lifestyle... I just wanted to crawl under a rock.. but for some reason 41, has turned over a new leaf for me.. I think it's because I've accepted getting old  but realized I can still look young with the right choices!
  • What do you mean " if you exercise and don't eat your calories back, you'll do better."

You've got to regain your strength, so if you do 90 minutes of Hatha yoga and burn 400 calories, MFP will say that you earned 400 calories for that exercise...

If you eat it back, you will stay on track, but if you don't eat it, you're overall weightloss should be more as you will be under your calorie goal!

Sounds right in my head - apologies if it's confusing!

Weight loss isn't linear. You may or may not be able to. You just have to wait & see.
  • Makes sense to me :)

MFP sets your calories at a minimum of 1200 calories and you are encouraged to eat a "net" 1200/day. Net meaning you eat 1200 calories plus whatever calories you burned through exercise. However, some people will eat a straight 1200 calories and their exercise calories are used to further their weight loss.

From my experience, It's tough to sustain a straight 1200 calories every single day if you are exercising.

We all want quick fixes, but you'll have more lasting results if you develop a healthy lifestyle and focus on steady improvement.
