Taking a Spin class tomorrow...

Hello MFP! I am starting my first spin class tomorrow and I am very nervous! Are there any suggestions on what to expect or wear? I am a newbie to working out also.

  • HI Alexia,
The spin classes I've been to are usually an hour long and will include warm up, cool down and maybe some stretching at the end. The middle part is where all the work gets done. They'll do things like increase resistance a couple notches each minute till it's really hard, then decrease a couple notches each minute till it's easy again. They'll have you stand up off the seat like you're climbing a hill for a few minutes, then sit back down and recover. Also you'll probably do some sets increasing how fast you pedal until you're going like crazy.

The good news is, you get to control your own resistance. If it's getting too hard, just decrease your resistance until it's easy so you can recover. You can make it pretty easy on yourself if it's getting too hard. If you're totally dying just stop and rest or leave the class if you need to. Worst-case scenario you'll need to do some more stationary bike work until you feel fit enough for the class again.

Wear whatever you would bike in and be prepared to sweat. On an outdoor bike ride you get a nice wind in your face but on the spin bike you just sit there and heat up. Most people will bring a towel to wipe the sweat off their face, I would DEFINITELY do this.

    The class is fun, enjoy!

It'll be fun. Don't worry about a thing. Bring a water bottle and a towel. Get there early to claim the bike you want, and let the instructor know it's your first time. They'll help you with everything. Make sure you understand the 3 positions he/she is going to tell you to get into during the ride.

Ok..I'm gonna give some TMI here...I highly SUGGEST you get a padded seat..or your "woo-hoo" will be very sore..and for quite some time :blushing:

I did Spin for 4 days a week..never left without my padded seat...the bike seat is harder than a rock! and up and down on it..

    Trust me...hehe
  • All excellent advice .... i do spin all the time and it is one of those classes where you sweat almost straight away ! i always have a bottle of water with ice and water in it and in the warmer months a wet wash cloth to wipe my face down and keep me cool !! You will love it its a great workout

Thank you to being very detailed. I am still a little nervous but I feel way better about it. Thanks again.

You will feel *amazing* afterward. It will be challenging, but go at your own pace. If you like it, you may want to purchase the cycling shoes and some padded cycle pants. Oh, and don't forget to take water! Enjoy!
