Okay, my bf just sent me a link to the following event and I am SO EXCITED to do this!! It is a 4-mile obstacle course which includes avoiding zombies! I am ready to battle it out with the ZOMBIES!! I have been wanting to do a 5k or something, but am at the beginning of my weight loss and do not yet have the endurance.

I do not currently run but have been working out and have lost about 60 pounds total from my highest weight. I have just gotten back into this and gotten serious about it this past month. I have TWO MONTHS to prepare for the Zombie Run!!

Any and all help and advice on how to prepare for this type of thing would be greatly appreciated!! And if you are in my part of Florida I would LOVE to have buddies to go with me!!

Alison

PS. I am looking for friends who are serious and on daily, so if that is you please feel free to add me!

"The Running Dead" 1st Annual Zombie Stomp
The Eglin Fitness Center invites all runners and athletes to navigate a series of challenging obstacles throughout a 4-mile course in an attempt to reach the finish line. Doesn't sound too hard, right? Well, what if there are ZOMBIES?! Run for your life at Eglin's 1st Annual Zombie Stomp, starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Postl Point. Opening festivities begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by a safety briefing for all runners. At the end of the race, participants will celebrate their survival—or their zombie transformation—with music, food, and beverages. (Beer included!) Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female competitors.

So you're training from scratch to a 4 mile obstacle run, correct?

First and foremost, go to a running store and get fitted for proper shoes for your gate. Not a sports store, one that specializes in running. Do this first, before any training.

Next, decide how you want to run the actual race. Given the short timeframe before the run, I would suggest a run/walk program like Jeff Galloway's. I used couch to 5K and did well with it. Then when I started bridging to 10K, I injured my hip. I'm still fighting that 2 months later and just started using Jeff's program instead and it's great. My average speed is the same, but I'm not as exhausted and my hip is better.

It will likely take you the full 2 months to just prepare for the distance. I've never done an obstacle run, so I don't know how to tell you to train for that!

Oh, and if you want practice running from Zombies...check out the Zombies Run App. It's a lot of fun!! I do it in conjunction with the Galloway method, though I did get eaten by zombies last night :-(

Thanks so much! I am going to do all three (shoes, running program and zombie app)!!
  • I have signed up for the Toronto Zombie Run on the 22nd of this month! So excited! I have completed C25K and have done some extra 5K practice runs. I think I will do fine :)
  • If you're interested in something similar, there is Run For Your Lives:

They have several events throughout the year in several parts of the US. The next one in Florida is November. I hope to train for one, but I have to wait until I can get some good shoes. Need the monies.

You can follow them on Facebook too. They have info on upcoming events as well as discussions on zombies.
