CALLING ALL BAKERS! CALLING ALL COOKS!
I have this amazing chocolate cake recipe. I made it last cheat day, and it was delicious.
It's already pretty healthy (in my opinion), but I think the calories could be (should be) reduced.
Today's supposed to be my cheat day, but yesterday was my aunt's birthday party. Need I say more? Problem is, I already had plans with a friend today to make some kind of dessert and watch a movie. (TV show actually. A Game of Thrones.)
Here's the recipe, so you can get a good look at it.
Serves 12.
1 1/2 cups (minus one tbsp) all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 tbsp white vinegar
1/3 cup canola oil (I used olive oil, and it tasted AWESOME.)
1 cup icy cold water
And here are the directions, so you all know each role the ingredients play;
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Then, make three wells or indentations in that mixture. Poor vanilla into the 1st, vinegar into the 2nd, and oil into the 3rd. Douse everything in the cold water and stir until ingredients are combined. Pour mixture into prepared pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes.
Now, here's the catch; I can't use any substitutes marketed as low fat or zero calories, because my friend hates it when I do that. I even have to use full fat milk! "Oh, it doesn't taste the saaame!" she'll complain, even if it tastes exactly the same, or even better. I can, however, replace things with sour cream (we have some left over from fajita night) or perhaps greek/balkan yogurt, if I were to get some, and you know, things like that.
Oh! And the frosting recipe. I looked up this one, and apparently it's low calorie, but I think it could do with some altering as well. Here it is;
1 cup granulated white sugar (thinking about it, I could probably reduce this. It WAS quite sweet when I made it.)
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
Directions;
Mix together. Bring to a boil, and boil for one minute. Add vanilla. Cool partially, then beat with a mixer for 3 minutes, or until spreadable consistency.
If you can't find a way to save this frosting, I don't mind other recipes for it.
So, thanks for your time and help! Looking forward to seeing your suggestions =]

for the cake: omit the oil and substitute an equal amount of unsweetened applesauce0

You might try substituting 1/2 applesauce and 1/2 oil in the recipe. In my experience, using all applesauce left a dense, coarse textured cake but using 1/2 worked ok. Hope that helps.0

I would not do this. There is no other fat in the recipe.0 -
What size pan do you bake it in? It looks really good.0

I don't know of I can get the applesauce. My family has this thing where we don't usually buy things if we're only going to be using it once =P Last time we got apple sauce, it sat in the fridge collecting mold.0
