"Edited to fix typos"

edited December 2024 in Chit-Chat
I've seen dozens of posts that say this at the end, right above the little automated message that appears when you go back and edit.

So my question is...why? Why do people bother mentioning that it has been edited (for typos, or any other reason) when-

a.) The message at the bottom of the post already says so, and
b.) nobody should have to excuse or justify their edits?

What if I was drunk (hypothetical-I don't drink) and I said something unbelievably stupid? Or was in a bad mood and shot off a retort to somebody that I later decided was in poor taste and wanted to retract? Why should I add something like, "edited to fix a mistake". Isn't that what an edit is for, anyways?

I guess I'm just confused, it seems unnecessary/redundant. But maybe I'm missing a good reason why people do it.

Do you add your personal edit message? If so, why do you feel the need to? Help me understand!

Because they want people to know that when people see EDITED that it was to fix typos as opposed to changing what they actually said. Some people change their statements drastically a few minutes after the fact due to peoples responses. If I edit my statement, i want people to know it's to fix typos and not because I bowed to presssure over what I said.

Tis a shame you edit what you say instead of just deleting it.

I totally agree with you. As silly as it is, it drives me bonkers. ETA? OK, really, you don't need to put that in. Fix your typos, rewrite or add to your statement, what ever. I don't need to know. Petty, sure, silly, absolutely.

edited to add nothing, not a damn thing. OK, I guess that's not true, I added this pointless statement now didn't I.

That in no way made you appear small and insecure, no matter what all the readers of this thread actually thought.

Yes, it is. What is your point? Sometimes it really is the small stuff that gets you.

You remind me of that host on MSNBC that said to Gingrich "you realize that I won this argument and that everyone smart knows it" as if saying something makes it true. You are welcome to think of me as you wish and say as you wish. I'm sure your next response will include something about how having a JD makes you jesus and that greatness is measured by arrogance and self-delusion. Have a nice day.

Did I ever say it annoyed me? *Checks original post* Uhhh... no, the word "annoyed" was never mentioned once. I said It didn't make sense to me, and I was confused. I was simply asking others if they knew why it was done.

Know what's REALLY silly? Not reading a post clearly enough to understand what people are talking about, and then running your mouth for no apparent reason.

Seems kinda petty to say that. Why are you annoyed? (Ha, sorry. I couldn't help myself.)

I always edit in extra stuff as an afterthought. I'm really bad for thinking of things to say five minutes after I've said my piece.

I usually don't mention it in an edit though. (<---Look, I just did it)

Yeah that is exactly why when I edit to fix typos I says "Edited to fix typos" and if I add something to my post I always put ETA: rather than making a new reply in the topic.

Agreed - it allows someone who has already read or quoted your post to know what has changed. Is it just minor typos or did you add a whole bunch more information. When reviewing documents its much easier to read a marked for changes version if you have read it before...it's pretty much the same thing.

Sometimes, when someone says something blatantly wrong or offensive, they get called out on it, then go back and edit the original post to pretend it never happened. "Edit to fix typos" lets the readers know you aren't just backpedaling on what you said.

However, there's nothing stopping the back-pedlars from just adding "edit to fix typos" at the end of their new post....
