Yes - you need water in any form - vegetables, coffee, tea - not really 8 CUPS of plain water- though you will get other opinions

You can count coffee. I don't, but you could. It is a mild diuretic, so I figure that cancels out the count.

Of course, I drink about 100 ounces of just water a day, so I'm a little waterlogged all the time, and don't need to count it.

I count my plain iced tea as water, and water... but coffee and soda I don't. Coffee is a diuretic, so it kind of works against hydrating you.
  • I count that I drink it, but only water goes in the glass for me. I added a beverages catagory to put coffee and tea, beer and such LOL. Good luck on your journey.

Kidney specialists do agree on one thing, however: that the 8-by-8 rule is a gross overestimate of any required minimum.

Additionally, the idea that one must specifically drink water because the diuretic effects of caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea, and soda actually produce a net loss of fluid appears to be erroneous. The average person retains about half to two-thirds the amount of fluid taken in by consuming these types of beverages, and those who regularly consume caffeinated drinks retain even more.
