Sweating when you exercise!

I have noticed lately that I begin sweating much faster than I used to when exercising, doing the garden, housework etc. I have built my fitness up over the last year from nothing i.e. couch potato to walking 4 miles a day most days at about 4mph. In addition I do serious gardening - I am re-landscaping an area of my garden, therefore digging, fencing etc. But I have noticed that I sweat more and earlier in my exercise than before. Am I right to assume that this is because I have raised my metabolism and therefore start fat burning sooner? While it has been warmer of late, I live in Northern Ireland - warm therefore might be 20 degrees Celcius!!! I feel great and enjoy the exercise but it is unusual for me to end up dripping (literally) - as a Lady I have always merely glowed! LOL!

The more used to physical activity your body gets, the more efficient it becomes at cooling itself down. Since sweating is one way your body does that, you sweat sooner and more. :)

I think it's a good thing. I'm no expert but going on my own experience, I started exercising and losing weight at 248lbs and I barely sweated at all. I was doing the 30 day shred and I would get very out of breath and my face would be bright red but not much sweat, maybe a little on my forehead.

6 month later I am 210lbs and exercise 4-5 times a week and I now have sweat running down my face and back when I jog. Not very attractive sure but must be a good thing!
  • It's true our bodies become much more efficient at cooling the body the more ofter we exert ourselves.

I sweat loads and my PT told me it's a good thing as your body temp increases helping increase fat burn...i think it's something like that!!!

There are so many factors that are involved... I don't think it's as simple as attributing it to just your new fitness level. Although it could have something to do with it. But time of month, clothing, environment... metabolism in general, hormones... all of it comes into play.

Interesting thread. I have noticed I run hotter than I used to since doing much more exercise. I've considered gluing heat sinks to my forehead.

I now swerat more. After a spin class I can wring out the mpouisture in my sweat band. I have to keep moving it around otherwise the sweat falls in to my eyes. I look like a lobster at the end, bright red, dripping with sweat not a pretty sight but I do feel as though I have had a good workout.
Running outside is better as a breeze will keep me cooler and there is more to look at but I still go bright red!

Thanks guys! It is good to know that it is usual!! I definitely am a lot fitter now - to the extent that I am going to have to up the ante on exercise as I don't even get out of breath anymore - and believe me last year I puffed like a steam train!

Speaking of sweat, I bought some armbands. It's a bit '80s but beats dripping everywhere.

80s was a great era _ I remember it so well cos I was at Uni then started work etc!! (I left school in 1980!) and arm bands are not a bad idea!!

Most of the replies suggest an increase in metabolism causing the increase in sweating. This is a nice thought, but unlikely...

I cannot see your diary, but if I were to assume you have a consistent calorie deficit then I have some unfortunate news regarding deficits: No matter how much you workout or try to compensate, living with a calorie deficit SLOWS your metabolism over time, and eventually this leads to the dreaded plateau that almost everyone encounters. Even after the first week on a calorie-restricted diet, your metabolism slows somewhat. Over several weeks, you can drop your metabolic burn by several hundred calories. Our bodies adapt to a lifestyle of restriction after about two to three months, depending on the person, and this is most often when the dreaded plateau will set in. Over time the gradual decrease becomes apparent as the same exercises and eating habits don't produce the same results and eventually we stall. This is the point at which almost every trainer/dietician will suggest INCREASING your calories in order to INCREASE your metabolism and get out of the catabolic state your body is now stuck in. Catabolic being a 'destructive' state where your body is no longer building, but degrading because of lacking nutrients, fuel, etc.. If someone were to workout and eat at maintenance or over, this would increase one's metabolism, but in the face of a deficit, it is impossible to increase your metabolic rate.

You cannot create or increase by restricting or taking things away. Our bodies strive for balance with all things.

You've become more efficient with body temperature and electrolyte regulation. More efficient in any process of the body is a good thing though!

    To health!
