Does anyone experience menstrual like cramps after running? I sometimes get the worst cramps after running. Sometimes they start during my run. I started keeping track of them and I thought it had to do with my cycle, but I'm not even close to that time of the month and I have cramps yet again. When I first started getting them I thought it was because my ligaments were still getting used to the movement, but I have gradually increased the length of my runs and still experience them. And I'm only starting to get them consistently. As of about 3 months ago, I had only gotten them three times. Anyway, thanks for any feedback.

Cramps can be caused by a low concentration of metal ions, like sodium, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. Do you ingest enough of those?

I sometimes get a weird bellyache after running too, but generally attribute it to not having snacked properly beforehand.

Do you go to the loo before. Could it be a full bladder/ rectum pressing on things? Just a suggestion.

Yeah....it's pretty common to have bowel issues while running. When I go on long runs, I often have to hit the bathroom immediately after.

my wife often ahs issues while running either "spotting" or Leaking....she blames our three children, she may go see a Doc to get checked out.
  • I get them sometimes, especially on long runs. Cringe. I've found that bringing along Gatorade and water helps, and so does belly breathing (consciously making the effort to puff out your stomach/diaphragm when you breath in, and release when you breathe out--eventually it becomes second nature). And sometimes it's just something you've eaten, something you've drunk, your body being funky--it happens.

could be an electrolyte issue. i recently increased my mileage and have noticed that i start to get awful foot cramps at odd times, the kind of cramps where my second toe involuntarily curls under.

on my runs i drink water but i'm going to start mixing in stuff with more elecrolytes like coconut water

I get cramps like that a lot when running. I've found that I need to run on an empty stomach to minimize them, which is completely opposite of when I bike, where I need to have eaten something within the past hour in order to not get stomach aches from hunger.
