I grew up poor and very much ate less than 1000 calories a day. I'm male and very overweight, am 18.
If I want to start eating healthy, will I gain weight since my body is not used to eating a sufficient amount of calories?

I can't answer your question, just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in your concern about gaining weight from eating more. I'm struggling to consume enough calories to meet my target right now. It is getting easier every day, though as I'm learning what foods are best.0

you will probably gain a bit but if you're smart about it you can probably control it reasonably well. I'd suggest slowly increasing your intake until you reach what you should be at. Go up 100-150 cals per week while staying lightly active. I'm sure there is lots of info out there about repairing a damaged metabolism, do some searches.0

Up your calories gradually, and get a bit more exercise than you do now.
You might find a temporary gain but don't be put off by that.

I had surgery when I was 5. My mother did ask the doctor about my weight gain. He said it had something to do with the surgery.0
