Help!

help! I'm feeling really really frustrated with myself. I have been fighting the same 10 pounds for about 4 months now, and not making any headway at all.

In fact, I've lost all motivation to do anything. I keep trying to get started again and it lasts for maybe a day or so, and then I'm all caught up on the whirlwind of day to day life (which by the was is too busy and too stressful but there isn't anything I can do about it; many funerals the past few months (including 3 babies), job changes for me and my husband, property damage due to extreme weather - all totally out of my control but still needs to be dealt with)

I know I'll feel better if I can just cut out the crap and cram in more veggies, and get back to walking or jogging every day. But I feel so tired and overworked that I can't even bear the thought of exercise right now. (currently working from 9 or 10am to 9pm most days. sitting in a chair which does nothing good for the body)

Can you help me?? What are your tricks for getting back into the swing of things when life is out of control???
Clearly if I wait for things to calm down, its not going to happen, so I need any help I can get....

    Just keep logging.
I find that the fact that I'm logging my food makes me more conscious of how much I'm eating, even if it's not easy to make good choices due to the circumstances that are happening. And if you find you are consistently over your calorie intake, maybe up your calories to maintenance for a month or so - that give you a more realistic number to aim for and may take away some of the stress.

Prioritise exercise, even if it's a 15 min walk if there is no time for anything else - it really does help with controlling your mood.

Good luck with getting through a hard time.

Make sure you eat healthy food. Don't buy what you know is crap. Leave it at the store. Log Log Log. If you can't get exercise at least you have that. And like previous poster even a 15 minute walk helps.
  • Hi there, sorry to hear you are overwhelmed and life has got you in a rut.
Since you work long hours, how about taking a nice walk while on your lunch break? maybe ask a co-worker to go with you.
Hang in there, and don't be so hard on yourself during this time, but don't let these troubles keep you further down with food..

I know this isn't the most popular answer, but I've found that it is the right one whenever I get in a rut: discipline. As a full time student and full time employee, working 40-60 hours a week depending on whatever situation arises and having 4 really demanding classes this semester, I have had many days where all I want is to climb into bed and not come out until tomorrow, but I make myself get in the car and go to the gym, even if it's just for a half hour of cardio. Usually, once I get there, I feel more motivated and do much more, but the main thing is to get there.

It's hard, but as long as you're continually logging your food and coming in under your calorie goal, and getting to the gym or wherever you go for exercise for at least 3 days a week, you'll get back on track. It just takes some of that nasty word, discipline. You can do it. Have faith in yourself, and don't sell yourself short.

I find that when I LEAST want to get off my butt and exercise is when I need to do it MOST. I know it sounds cliche, but just do it. Just get up 30 minutes earlier than usual and go for a walk or run or spend 30 minutes after work. Find a partner to drag you along when you don't feel like doing it yourself. I think everyone goes through these ruts. I know I do. It gets easier.

You lost 33lbs, what's another 10? You got this :)

This might sound kind of weird, but start a blog! Sure, it might add something else to do to your already busy schedule, but just a quick post (I see some bloggers who only post a paragraph here and there) every once in a while can work wonders. The blogging community is just so great for support-- even if it's not about weight loss. We cheerlead each other, help each other when we stall, etc. etc.
I'm relatively new to the whole thing, but I've 'met' a lot of people who have given some GREAT advice not only for dieting and exercise but also for life. It's nice to get those stressful feelings and out into the open.

If you ever start one up, let me know! I'll cheerlead :)

blogger.com and wordpress.com are two free hosting sites if you're interested!

One of the best stress relievers is exercise. Go for that walk. Push yourself to exercise especially when you don't feel like it because that is when you need it the most and not just for weight loss.
  • I so agree with Laura. Trust me I am not always motivated to exercise but anything from the gym to a simple walk, puts you in a nice relaxed mood and the stress melts away. Even if you're doing leg exercises at your desk or stretches once in a while. It will help. It,s very important to keep logging and don't hesitate to ask your friends on MFP for support. I have found that the mesages they send gives me the right boost! Feel free to add me, I never say no to help or vice versa!
