Please Help Me get out of starvation mode!

Hello All,
I have recently been taken off a medication that made me have a ravenous appetite (made me gain over 80 pounds). I currently am in the opposite state that I was initially in. I do not have much of an appetite. I try to eat my best but I tend to come up short, in some cases to hit the 1200 calorie mark (even though my daily is 1780) I tend to resort to junk food. I have been partially sucessful with making 1200 but there are days where I absolutely can not, or I lose track and go over. I know this is hindering my weight loss but I really do not want to fall into starvation mode. I do not like forcing myself to eat but is there a shake mix, type of meal, or certain fruits that I can consume that will help? Thanks everyone in advance.

I doubt you're in starvation mode. Those words are thrown around too much.
If you're having a hard time reaching your calorie goal and you're constantly under, eat foods higher in calories/fats. Avocado, nuts/nut butters, protein bars/shakes. Hell, eat some ice cream.
You'll be alright.0 -
If this is typical of what you normally eat, I would say you need to cut your carbs and up your protein.0

with those macros you should eat

Go with your appetite - if you're not overly hungry don't force yourself to eat BUT what you do eat should be nourishing. A granola bar for breakfast probably isn't the best thing for you. 80% of the time stick to whole foods, fruit/veges, protein and carbs. It might just take some time for your body and appetite to adjust now you're off medication.0

Quadruple your protein intake and triple your fat intake0

Wow. I was kind of shocked to see your breakfast and lunch. I think you need to eat more and plan for more. I agree with everyone else that this is mostly carbs. You might be filling yourself up on carbs which is why you aren't hungry. I would suggest more protein and more veggies. If you find that's all you really want for lunch, try to plan some snack in between. They say eating small meals throughout the day is better for you. Maybe have some carrots for a between lunch and breakfast. Plan an afternoon snack.0

Damn dude you went 80 pounds over you must be in starvation mode0
-
yea you are prob most likely not in starvation mode0

have you tried taking additional vitamins?
One fo the unknown obscure symptoms of a deficiency of several B vitamins AND SOME MINERALS is loss of appetite, Thats why sometimes people say several people say "oh i dont liek taking vitamisn as they make me hungrier"
not sure of what medicine you were on. im guessing ti was prednisone whcih does cause ravenous appetitie, If it is that oen, it defineitly depletes your body of many vitamins, so you should probably take some vitamins for that reason as well as the fact tis hard to get all you need, liek calcium on 1200 A DAY.:drinker:0 -

Starvation mode -- sigh - this is the biggest piece of nonsense in MFP - people don't undereat a bit and go into starvation mode.

man ! i would be knawing my leg off.. lol .. way not enough food!!!!
are you exercising at all??? can stimulate hunger.. works metabolism.. and helps your mood too!!!
i walk 3 times a day (before work/short on lunch break one and after work walk or gym..
and i love it... keeps it more balanced for food... and for you ... from this chart...you def need to eat more to loose wt0 -
to beef up your dinner (ha ha, see what I did there), it's ok to eat some more meat, potatoes, rice, fruit... One banana has approximately a hundred calories. That's more than your entire dinner.
If you wish to up your proteine without going through the roof on th fat-calories, I suggest more lean meat, such as beef, (smoked) chicken and fish; if you don't feel like so much meat have some cottage cheese and legumes (beans, peas, lentils).
If you want to up your calorie intake but don't feel like consuming more food, you can add a handful of nuts or an avocado to your salad.0 -
You will not be in starvation mode (or at least any one of the many different interpretations of it thrown around here anyway). You probably have a hormonal imbalance that is screwing with your appetite. Eating more will get them more in whack.
With regard to what you have eaten - as has been mentioned before, you need more fats and proteins. There is no reason to cut carbs as you want to increase your calories, not swap them out. Good sources of calorie dense foods are: whole milk, nuts, seeds, avocados. Use dressing, do not use low fat products, use oils and butter to cook with. Full fat or 2% milk would be a strong recommendation as it has fat and a decent amount of protein.0 -

How can something be a myth if there is no actual definition of it? Also, the fact that post elicited so much debate, and the so called study is one of the most misunderstood blogs around the place and does not prove that the version of starvation mode discussed there does not exist.
I do agree with you that is totally thrown around willy nilly here.0 -
Starvation mode is indeed a myth. The idea that intaking less calories than you burn and not losing weight defies the laws of physics. So is the idea that eating more will make you lose weight, what kind of nonsense is this? Same as the whole "breakfast kickstarts your metabolism", my other pet hate. Your metabolism is running alll the time!" ALL THE TIME.
Anyhow. Plateauing does exist, because the body is adjusting to different energy intake and outgoings. This is normal, dont measure your weight loss in days and weeks, measure them in months and years! just keep at it, and when you dont see weight going down, think of the other benefits - you feel light and energetic, you look great in that dress, you no longer need to suck in your tummy when your man cuddles you from behind... thats what matters, not the number.0 -

Wow the total calories is almost my lunch calories. No seriously, eat more. Throw in some more proteins and some healthy fats. Peanuts, almonds, lean meats, beans, cottage cheese and so on.0 -
Following something similar to my diet:
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/diary/Matt_Wild?date=2012-09-11
Will help you trim up and feel full most of the time. Like any diet however you do get hunger pangs but it is all manageable. End of the day, you need to eat to lose weight - you can't starve and expect the body to give up its stores readily - thats why they exist, to save the body in times of starvation. And any time you do consume food, your body will look to hold back more reserves, esp if you go above your basic maintenance level.
BTW you don't need to use protein powder, I do it for ease - you could use cottage cheese, eggs or similar.0 -
That Steak looks sooo good. I agree...eat more protein.0
-
If this is typical of what you normally eat, I would say you need to cut your carbs and up your protein.
I disagree with this. The amount of carbs is by no means excessive. She's over 1000 calories under - that is what is making the % of carbs look disproportionate.0 -
Hey Maryjane! Hang in there. I'm certainly no expert, but most people seem to be saying the same thing about balancing your carbs and proteins. I'm a veggie and I have learnt on myfitnesspal that the carbs are not always my friends. I used to plan meals around bread, pasta and rice, but now I am seeing that when I reduce these foods I have more energy and I loose weight. I really do know how you feel, so try to improve your proteins and shrink the size of carbs on your plate. It might not be spot on science, but if in doubt I make carbs only a quater of plate and let the veggies and salad own the majority. I'm looking forward to watching your success!0

Like the others have said "starvation mode" is a term thrown around a lot on this app but is a myth. Not eating nutritious meals can cause more issues than anything else. In terms of trying to reach your mark, try to have more of a variety of foods.
The nature valley bars are great as a snack during the day but don't provide you with the essential vitamins/minerals etc to keep you brain and body healthy. For breakfast try some an egg with two slices of toast, and if you want something extra try fruit salad - this will give you some of the protein and fibre you need. Lunch is a good start, maybe try and bulk up that bagel with some salads and meat (i.e Ham (off the bone is better than the processed logs) or if you aren't into that smoked salmon is yum in bagels and again high in protein). Again as others have said for dinner more protein and also add in a variety of vegetables - you can steam them or boil them with minimal salt. You can get protein from meat, fish, nuts and cottage cheese. Fish like salmon are a great source of Omega 3 which is good for you brain, heart and also if you suffer from arthritis! Adding in some dairy is also great for calcium and strong bones.
Hope this helps you and good luck!0 -
